Stars of tomorrow to learn from the biggest star of all

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 September, 2008 : - - Casuarina, NSW -- The most famed and successful female surfer in history, Layne Beachley, has lent her name to help nurture Australia’s brightest female surfing talents.

Known to many as the greatest professional female surfer of all time, after accruing a total of seven world titles, Beachley has teamed up with Surfing Australia’s and the Australian Sports Commission’s Surfer Elite Program, to give back to the sport which gave her so much.

Speaking via email after recently finishing second at Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle in France, Beachley is over the moon to be affiliated with such a prestigious development initiative. “I am extremely privileged to have this elite surfing camp named in my honour,” Beachley said, whilst currently rated third on the ASP Women’s World Tour.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity to be involved with these programs,” she added. Responsible for the development of Australia’s young, elite surfers Surfing Australia’s CEO Mark Lane cannot underestimate how important Beachley’s involvement will be for the development of surfing’s next superstars.

“We are honoured that such an inspirational and successful athlete such as Layne is able to give back to grass roots surfing,” he said. “I believe it is a fitting way for Surfing Australia to recognise her achievement’s and honour her contribution to female surfing upon all levels.”

Previously known as the MR Camp, named after the four times World Professional Surfing Champion Mark Richards, The Layne Beachley Elite Surfing Camp is the major female focus of Surfing Australia/Australian Sport’s Commission ‘Surfer Elite Program’.

“This is the first year that Surfing Australia has split the camp into separate entities,” Lane continued. “By implementing this new program and separating the two genders, Surfing Australia aims to establish a more personalised approach to the fostering of Australia’s brightest stars.”

With thirty of the top surfers from around Australia are attending the camp, the future certainly looks bright for surfing within Australia. “Providing the best possible environment for the best young surfers across the nation is what we aim to achieve,” Lane continued. “Having the likes of Layne Beachley involved in these programs is a coup for the development grass roots surfing in this country.”

The Layne Beachley Elite Surfing Camp is just one of many opportunities for Australia’s young and talented surfers to take the next step in their fledgling careers.

India Payne (Cape Woolamai, VIC), Brinkley Davies (Hope Forest, SA), Bronte Macaulay (Cowaramup, WA), Mikaela Greene, (Yallinyup, WA), Eden Putland (Currumbin Waters, QLD), Brodie Doyle (Rainbow Beach, QLD), Sarah Kokkin (The Junction, NSW), Codie Klein (Kingscliff, NSW), Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie, NSW), Sophie Bourke (TAS) and Nikki Van Dijk (Cowes, VIC) are the first class of junior female surfers to attend the Layne Beachley Elite Surfing Camp.

Through the utilisation of the expert coaching and technology available at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre (HPC), Australia’s most promising junior surfers are afforded the opportunity to learn from the best.
