Boost Mobile Pro Starts this Weekend; Rookie Dane Reynolds to Surf His Fifth Edition of the Event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 September, 2008 : - - San Clemente, California – Despite being a rookie on the ASP World Tour, Dane Reynolds (USA), 22, will paddle out for his fifth installment of the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley this week. The event waiting period begins this Sunday, Sept. 7 and stretches until Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

Reynolds, who hails from Ventura, California, was granted wildcard entry into the Lower Trestles event in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and will face Jeremy Flores (FRA), 20, and Heitor Alves (BRA), 26, in his first USA appearance since joining the elite ASP Top 45.

Reynolds ruined the runs of 2007’s two top rated surfers – Australians Mick Fanning, 27, and Taj Burrow, 30 – at Lower Trestles last year, but is unassuming in his quest to shake things up at the high-performance venue this year. Currently rated World No. 26, Reynolds started off the year on the right foot, but was forced to withdraw from Fiji due to illness and then suffered unfortunate first round losses in South Africa and Bali.

“It will be different this year because I’ve already been on tour half a year and a couple of first round losses are going to hurt my confidence,” Reynolds said. “If anything my success last year will put more pressure on me this year, which makes it hard, but being on tour has been great.”

Fellow rookie Jordy Smith (ZAF), 20, also fared well as a wildcard entrant into the Boost Mobile Pro last year. Both Smith and Reynolds finished equal 9th at Trestles in 2007 and then went on to qualify for full-time berths on the ASP World Tour after topping the ASP World Qualifying Series.

This year’s wildcards are hoping to follow suit. Yadin Nicol, 22, currently sits sixth on the WQS while Brett Simpson, 23, finds himself in 20th place on that series. The top 15 surfers on the men’s WQS qualify for the ASP World Tour at year’s end.

Former World No. 2 Rob Machado (USA), 35, is the third wildcard entrant in the event and has drawn eight-time ASP World Champion and good friend Kelly Slater (USA) in the first round.

Australian Danny Wills, 32, has withdrawn from the event for medical reasons and his spot will go to 2000 ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW).

Official Boost Mobile Pro surf forecasters Surfline are calling a building trend starting Sunday with swell forecasts looking very good for the first part of the week. The first official call on competition status will be made on Sunday morning at 7.
