APSPR’s Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Set To Crown Season Champs

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 September, 2008 : - -The Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit  returns to Playa Middles, Isabela, Puerto Rico Sept. 27 - 28, 2008 to crown the champions for this year’s competitive season. Gaby Escudero leads at this point with 1,470 points, but it’s a tight race for the men’s crown, with a half dozen surfers able to leap-frog Gaby with a win, putting their fate in their own hands.

Carlos Cabrero sits in 2nd , a mere ten points back, with Darren Muschett only ten more points back in 3rd. Half a dozen more could contend should things get weird and a few upsets occur, making for some interesting scenarios. On the women’s side, Anastasia Ashley’s 1,860 points sets the pace, and she enjoys a comfortable margin over Lilac Alvarado in 2nd with 1,320. In a tie for 3rd with 1,100 points each are Connie Arias and Amy Murphree.

Along with the points race there’s $10,000 up for grabs for the men, and $5,000 for the women as prize money, and once again Coopertone is offering $500 for the best performance  in each division.   There will be some stoked surfers waving around those cardboard checks given out to the winners, and the others cashing a check and bringing home some grocery money.

The APSPR’s Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit events are the most significant and prestigious in a thousand mile radius, and attract the region’s best surfers.  The Middles event marks the 13th edition of the APSPR’s Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit, establishing a tradition of epic events that add to the rich history of Puerto Rican surfing.

Professional surfing continues to develop in Puerto Rico and the entire region, and the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit offers an excellent opportunity for local athletes to compete against the very best, while promoting their talents. The talent pool runs deep, and given the opportunity, any number of competitors could do some serious damage on an international level. With the likes of past Corona champs Brian Toth, Darren Muschett and Dylan Graves, as well as Alejandro Moreda already making plenty of noise on the world circuit, it’s only a matter of time before we get one of our own in the big leagues. It’s that level of competition, as well as the professionalism of the event staff and judging panel that ensures success every time the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit stages an event.

All you have to do is mention the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit and Middles together in the same sentence and images of surrealistic barrels come to mind from past events. People talk about past events like they happened yesterday because the conditions were simply epic.

Middles can just get mental this time of year, and with the tropical storms Hanna, Ike, and Josephine lining up like concert goers for a porta-let, contest organizers have the back-up venues of Jobos and Wilderness to take maximum advantage of any swell. It’s a bit early to say, but there’s every reason to be hopeful. Heck, it might be worth the entry fee just to get it with three other people if it’s that good.

It wouldn’t be a Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit event if there weren’t some quality entertainment going down. Come down and enjoy a coldie on the beach while enjoying the surf action, then at night hit the town for some live music and video replays from the days heats at the local bars and restaurants. Where ever you go, the Coronas will be ice cold and the party will be flowing. I’d advise competitors to show some restraint, but then again, everyone has their own strategy. A little dancing and romancing might be just the thing to loosen up.

You’ll have access to every scoring ride of the event, of every heat, through the innovative “Video On Demand” feature on the website. Check the action on www.apspr.net  at the completion of each day of surf. You can scan the draw and select which heat you would like to view. Each scoring ride will be shown, along with the points earned for that wave, offering great entertainment and feedback. We have upgraded the “Video On Demand” using a more efficient format so make sure to check it out.

Contestants wishing to enter can do so by downloading the entry and insurance form at HYPERLINK  http//www.apspr.net ,  www.apspr.net Mail entry with money order payments to the APSPR address shown on the form heading, or visit Hang Loose Surf Shop, Playa Jobos, Puerto Rico. A $35 late fee will be charged after Saturday, Sept. 20th, and no entry will be accepted after Wed. Sept. 24th, at 5:00 p.m..
