Greg Emslie and Nikita Robb take honours in 2008 SA Open of Surfing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 September, 2008 : - - East London ASP WQS campaigners Greg Emslie and Nikita Robb underlined their local knowledge of 4 - 6 foot Nahoon Reef when they won the Men's and Women's divisions respectively in the 2008 Majestic Hotel SA Open of Surfing today (Sunday September 7).
In the Men's final a patient Emslie showed that he remains one of South Africa's best surfers, posting a score of 18 points to pocket the winners cheque of R4,000. Despite giving it his best, runner up Matthew Kruger of Durban only managed 13,75 points and had to settle for second.
Tyrell Johnson of East London scored 9.65 and came third and former SA Open champion Dylan Stone of Port Elizabeth scored 5,5 for his fourth place. The beaten semi finalists were all East London surfers. Travis Naude and Simon Fish were joint fifth and Philip Malherbe and Gary Muller were joint seventh.
Emslie arrived back from competing in Europe last Monday and clearly enjoyed surfing at home, "Despite the pressure to win at Nahoon Reef it was great not having to worry about WQS points in this one. The waves were contestable throughout and the standard of surfing was high. I was pushed to do my best right to the end of the final. Well done to Matthew, he really surfed well"
Nikita Robb reclaimed the Women's crown for East London when she posted 9,75 points to beat 2007 SA Open champion Tammy Lee Smith of Salt Rock into second. Smith scored 6,75, Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand was third with 4,75 and Sarah Baum of Athlone Park in Durban came fourth with 3,35 points.
East London twins Alice and Laurie Mc Gregor both came third in their respective semi finals to capture joint fifth spot.
Robb, who arrived home from her ASP WQS duties last Wednesday was stoked to be able to compete in the SA Open,"It's great to be home and surfing with all my mates. I am glad I got to surf in a local contest because there is always plenty of support. I am stoked that I have been able to bring the title back to East London."
Emslie and Robb received a bonus of R2,500 each on top of the regular 2A SSA Pro Surf Tour prize-money courtesy of Majestic Hotel, Surfing South Africa and Border Surfriders Association.
This was the fifth time that the SA Open of Surfing has been held in East London and remains one of the few major events to take place at this famous surf spot.
