HOT SURFING AT TRESTLES TOPS NEW ENTRIES IN BILLABONG FREEWAVE CHALLENGE;
BEST RIDES OF SUMMER FROM AROUND THE U.S. ARE SHOWCASED IN VIRTUAL EVENT
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2008 : - - Newport Beach, Ca -- With just over two weeks left in the Billabong Freewave Challenge summer season and swells moving in from all directions, fresh video clips of the best free surfing performances on the U.S. Mainland are being uploaded daily to the event website. The Freewave Video Hub features entries in five categories including Monster Maneuver, Small Fries (under 16), Best Tube, Heartbreaker (female performance) and Longest Ride. The virtual surfing event runs through September 22 and is open to all rides by all surfers caught on video outside of regular surfing contests on the East, West and Gulf Coasts of the USA.
The key Monster Maneuver division is shaping up as a showdown between big skate-inspired aerial moves by underground innovators versus extended rides with multiple carves by world tour pros. Entries posted in the last week include a McTwist by Zach Rhinehart at Oceanside, California and a huge Alley-Oop by Tommy O'Brien at Panama City Beach along Florida's Gulf Coast on a Hurricane Gustav-generated wave. On the other hand, with the top ASP competitors in Southern California for this week's Boost Mobile Pro, the warm-up sessions at Lower Trestles have produced a number of high-caliber entries showing the skills of WCT veterans including Taj Burrow, Chris Ward and Bede Durbidge along with fast-rising Basque surfer Aritz Aranburu.
With a solid south swell arriving on the West Coast and hurricane season in full effect on the East and Gulf Coasts, the final stretch of the Billabong Freewave Challenge is expected to feature the hottest performances since the event kicked off June 20. Once the open event period ends on the final day of summer (September 22), the top-rated rides will be nominated as finalists. The surfers and videographers involved in the event will vote on what they view as the best performances, with the Freewave winners being named in October. The online event features $40,000 in prize money for the top athletes and shooters across the five divisions.
