    Macy's Trifecta Updates

Ben Bourgeios & Sebastian Zietz lead Macy's Trifecta Surf Series

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2008 : - - San Clemente, Ca -- With the completion of stop one of the 2008 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series, the 6.0 Lowers Pro, and stop two, the Oakley Newport Beach Pro, just a week away, the Trifecta points race is officially on.

Fans can track all of the action at catrifecta.com, which features the latest news, results and information about each of the three events, as well as photos, videos, surfer bios, ratings and product giveaways.

With his win at the inaugural 6.0 Lowers Pro, April 30-May 3, Ben Bourgeois (Carlsbad, CA) is in the lead for the Trifecta bonus with 1500 points.  He’s followed by Fred Patacchia (HAW) 1313 pts, Joel Centeio (HAW) 1125 pts and Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA) 1069 pts, who placed in the same order at the 6.0 Lowers Pro.

The current top four are followed closely by Kiron Jabour (HAW) and Kieran Horn (Santa Cruz, CA), each with 975 pts, Dusty Payne (HAW) and Cory Lopez (Dana Point, CA), each with 919 pts, and Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA), Asher Nolan (Neptune Beach, FL), Federico Pilurzu (CRI) and Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), each with 825 pts.

As the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series has proven in the past, it’s still anyone’s game and especially for the surfers who are sitting in the top 33 after Trestles. The Oakley Newport Beach Pro is notorious for setting the stage going into the O’Neill Cold Water Classic for the top three finishers in the Trifecta race each year. For all three years that the Trifecta has existed, the top three finishers on the Trifecta have finished in the top four places in Newport.

Two-time defending Oakley Newport Beach Pro champion, 2007 Trifecta runner up and 2006 Trifecta champion Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) will be one of those chasing the Oakley Newport Beach win.  He’s currently sitting in equal 17th in the Trifecta standings with 675 points.

“The Macy’s Trifecta Surf Series offers a good opportunity for younger guys coming up here in America to gain competition experience in the pro ranks and also see how they size up to possibly taking on the WQS full bore,” says Yeomans. “There is a huge California contingent trying to qualify for the WCT this year. A lot of that is by the opportunities afforded by the Trifecta. It’s what prepares you to take your surfing ability onto the world stage.”

Dane Johnson (Carlsbad, CA), Ritchie Collins (Newport Beach, CA), Shane Beschen (San Clemente, CA), Austin Ware (Solana Beach, CA), Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA), Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA) and Brent Dorrington (AUS) share the equal 17th position with Yeomans, each with 675 pts. Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA), Rudy Palmboom (ZAF), Tanner Gudaukas (San Clemente, CA), Sean Marceron (Leucadia, CA), Torrey Meister (HAW), Sean Moody (HAW), Bud Freitas (Santa Cruz, CA) and Flynn Novak (HAW) share equal 25th place with 525 pts each.

The top 33 is rounded out by Daniel Jones (HAW), Shota Nakamura (JPN), Jesse Heilman (Daytona Beach, FL), Shea Lopez (Daytona, FL), Dustin Cuizon (HAW), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Darrell Goodrum (San Diego, CA), James Wood (AUS), Alex Smith (HAW), Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), Noi Kaulukukui (Santa Cruz, CA), Jason Shibata (HAW), Casey Brown (HAW), Dane Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), Nils Schweizer (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and Teppei Tajima (JPN), each with 506 pts.

Now in it’s fourth consecutive year, the ASP North America specialty series unites three prominent ASP WQS events held in California: the 6.0 Lowers Pro at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, April 29-May 3; Oakley Newport Pro at 56th Street, Newport Beach, Sept 16-21; and O’Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz, Oct. 21-26.

For the second consecutive year, Juniors will also get in on the Trifecta action with an increased $10,000 bonus purse for the top three overall points winners from the three Trifecta series associated Oakley Pro Junior events.

After the 6.0 Lowers Pro, the top four Pro Junior surfers on the Trifecta are: Sebastian Zietz (HAW) 500 pts, Jason Harris (Huntington Beach, CA) 430 pts, Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL) 365 pts and Dusty Payne (HAW) 335 pts. The top nine is rounded out by Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL) and Blake Jones (Melbourne Beach, FL), each with 305 pts, Austin Smith Ford (Santa Cruz, CA) and Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), each with 278 pts, and Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), Bruno Rodrigues (Huntington Beach, CA), Brent Reilly (Carlsbad, CA) and Matt Mohagen (Los Angeles, CA), each with 250 pts.

The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series was formed in 2005 to strengthen surfing in America and has added additional cash and prize incentives each year since its inception. The Trifecta series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points towards the ASP WQS and Pro Junior end-of-year rankings, which factors into advancement to the coveted ASP World Tour and ASP World Junior Championships.

Additionally, the series will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer who takes first-place in all three WQS events. Should one surfer not win all three events, the overall points-winner will receive a $10,000 bonus and second and third will receive $3,500 and $1,500, respectively. Last year, the Oakley Pro Junior division was brought on board for the first time with a $5,000 bonus, which has been doubled to $10,000 for 2008, rewarding top performance within the three events.

In addition to Macy’s, the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series is also supported by SURFER and Surfing magazines, WaveWatch, ASP North America and FUEL TV.
