Malibu Surfing Association reclaims MSA Classic crown

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2008 : - - The Malibu Surfing Association's Competition Team emerged victorious at the 45th Anniversary MSA Classic. Held in beautiful weather and a steady 2-4' south swell at world-famous First Point, Malibu, the MSA Classic entered over 300 competitors representing California surfing clubs from La Jolla to Santa Cruz and as well as the East Coast's Virginia Longboard Federation.

MSA Team members took first place in five contest divisions: Cole Robbins (Jr. Men's 13-17); Chad Marshall (Men's 20-29); Kassia Meador (Women 18-34); Mario Quiros (Grand Masters Men 30-59); and Ana Osgood (Sr. Women 35+). Said Donny Wilson, professional surfer and MSA Team Captain, "We're proud of our team and the teams from other clubs.  A great contest. Everyone came out, turned out, tuned up, blew up, and got down."

Other standout performances included: Julie Cox (MSA), Mark Wolfinger (Windansea Surf Club), Johnnie Hooper (Malibu Boardriders Club), Lucas Dirkse (Windansea Surf Club), Kaitlin Maguire (Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club), and 7-year old Tiare Thompson (Windansea Surf Club).

On Saturday, the MSA hosted the Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Expression Session presented by Barefoot Wines, with stars of music, tv, and film showcasing their surfing in a one-hour, free surf format.

The event included Grammy nominated musician Jason Mraz, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Desperate Housewives star Richard Burgi, television actors Chad Lowe and David Chokachi, X-Games host Sal Masekela, and others, and raised $4,000 for the Surfrider Foundation.

Sunday's events included a celebration of the MSA's 1963 contest, the first at Malibu. Several 1963 participants and attendees, including San Diego legends Skip Frye and Hank Warner, took to the water with professional surfers Dane Perlee, Josh Rothman, and others for 1-hour in perfect waist-to-chest Malibu surf.

As part of weekend's events, the MSA and ...Lost Enterprises presented the "MSA Blue Award" for environmental activism to professional surfer James Pribram. Also, the MSA, together with the Surfing Heritage Foundation presented to legendary Malibu surfer Lance Carson the "MSA Surfer Award" for his contributions to the sport of surfing.

A percentage of the MSA Classic's gross revenue will be donated to Heal the Bay, Santa Monica Baykeeper, and the Surfrider Foundation's West LA/Malibu Chapter, each working with the MSA to improve water quality at Surfrider Beach.
