Roxy Jam Cardiff kicks off with great weather and waves

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 September, 2008 : - - The Roxy Jam Cardiff presented by Schick® Quattro for Women® got underway today with the Linda Benson Women's World Longboard Pro kicking off the weekend long festival.  The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned six-star event at Cardiff Reef debuted to sunny skies and two to four foot waves holding up for the entire day of competition. 

Locals and visitors alike came out to enjoy the sunshine and support the more than 80 female pro longboarders from around the world in the contest. Rounds 1 and 2 of the Pro Competition were surfed today, with the top two surfers in each heat advancing to the next round.  Stand-outs included local North County San Diego surfer and  former world champion Cori Schumacher, Hawaiian Roxy team-rider Rachel Evan Spear and Juli Warisaya of Japan. 

Cori posted the highest score of the day with 9.75 in her first heat, following it up with a solid 7.75.  Cori, Rachel and Juli will join top riders Saturday for Rounds 3 and 4 including Hawaiians Kelia Moniz and Crystal Dzigas, Roxy team rider Kassia Meador and defending event champ and world champ Jen Smith.

The winner of the Roxy Jam Cardiff will be crowned the Women's U.S. Regional Longboarding Champion and will earn a coveted spot in the prestigious Roxy Jam Biarritz Women's World Longboard Championships in July 2009. 

In addition to the $15,000 purse prize up for grabs, presenting sponsor Schick® Quattro for Women® will award a $3,000 Schick® Quattro for Women® Style Award to the pro surfer that demonstrates the best style over the course of the contest.  Hansen's Surf Shop will offer a second $3,000 purse prize for the Wave of the Day.

With the first day of competition over, the surfers and spectators are looking forward to the upcoming beach festival kicking off tomorrow morning at 9am.  The family-oriented beach fair, featuring Roxy and other sponsor tents, also includes free hairstyling by Paul Mitchell, yoga classes on the beach, making your own custom flip flops and a pancake breakfast with the Encinitas Fire Dept. 

Closing out the festivities on Sunday is a board shapers raffle, with a chance to win a personal board of choice from a legendary surfboard shaper.  All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy to help raise community awareness about urban run-off and to supplement the Conservancy's water quality testing program.
