    Juniors make the most of perfect St Mikes at Reef SA National Junior championships

    Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 October, 2008 : - - Perfect four foot point-break waves and ideal offshore conditions that were described by locals as 'the best in months' gave surfers competing in the 2008 Reef SA National Junior Surfing Championships presented by Ocean & Earth SA at St Mikes on the KZN South Coast a real chance to shine and post some high quality scores.

    After three days of tough competition there are 12 surfers left in seven of the divisions and just four finalists remaining in the Under 12 Girls group. Chanelle Botha of Southern KZN, Inge McLaren of Border, Anoush Zakarian of Boland and Tahra Uren of EP will have to wait until Sunday, when they will make of the first of eight finals that will bring the tournament to a close.

    In the repercharge heats surfed early on Day three, Lynne Abersalie of EP and Jordyn Verhoutte of SKZN were the final two Under 14 girls to reach the quarters in this division while Roche Lourens of Boland and Heather Klug of SKZN were the last two Under 16's to make it through to the final 12. Lois Hansmeyer of KZN and Boland's Morag Steele went through to the Under 18 girls quarters.

    The four Under 12 boys who went through to the final 12 from the repercharge rounds were Simo Mkhize of SKZN, Jordan Dalbock and Zama Ndamase of Border and Jonny Hollis of Southern Cape. The balance of Day three focused on the surfers in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 Boys Round three and after seven hours of competitive surfing the quarter finalists in each of these divisions was decided.

    The Under 14 final twelve are Jarred Veldhuis (WP), Slade Prestwich (KZN), Diran Zakarian (Bol), David Gouws (SKZN), Steven Sawyer (EP), Dominic Notten (WP), Brandon Benjamin (Dev Academy), Greg Visagie (Bol), Daniel Buitendag (S/Cape), Vumani Makhanya (SKZN) and Kyle Emda (KZN).

    Mikey February (WP), Devin Lane (KZN), JC Susan (WP), Grant Beck (EP), Beyrick de Vries(KZN), David Brand (WP), Khayelihle Ngcobo and Brendan Fijac (both SKZN), Tyde Gatke (Bor), Jacob Mellish (Bol), David Van Zyl (KZN) and Cameron Neubert (EP) make up the Under 16 quarter finalists.

    The last twelve Under 18's are David Defilippi (SKZN), Josh Saunders (EP), Shawn Dennis (KZN), Indi Rooken Smith (S/Cape), Dale Staples (S/Cape), Chad du Toit (KZN), Brett Palmboom and Kyle Whittaker ( both SKZN), Brendon Gibbens and Matthew Bromley (both WP), Haydn MacNicol (KZN) and Tommie Kruger (Bol).

    The 2008 South African Junior Championships continues at St Michaels on Sea on the Hibiscus Coast of Southern KZN until Sunday October 5 when the eight champions and the top provincial team for 2008 will be decided.
