Champions to be crowned tomorrow as the Rip Curl GromSearch rolls on in Coffs Harbour
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 October, 2008 : - - Macauley's Beach, NSW -- As the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by SNICKERS flies toward the pointy end of competition, tomorrow’s stars have their eyes firmly set on tomorrow – literally. With six champions to be crowned tomorrow in six tightly fought divisions, there is much at stake in a field stacked with future professional stars.
However, on day three it was Harry Wheeler (Coolangatta, QLD) who had the ocean in the palm of his hand, dazzling spectators with an epic performance in the 14 years and under division.
“I had fun out there today,” Wheeler said. In challenging, small conditions Wheeler shone on his forehand en-route to accumulating one the highest single wave scores of the day with a 7.65 (out of a possible 10). “I was just lucky that one of the bigger sets came my way,” he added. “Everyone surfs so well at this event so in the end it’s just going to come down to whoever gets luckiest.”
The Rip Curl GromSearch series travels to seven different spots around Australia, giving young hopefuls a chance to surf in their own backyards in an effort to make their way to the National Finals at Bells Beach. Originally hailing from Cronulla, Wheeler now resides within the surfing haven that is the Gold Coast and is stoked to be mixing it with the best in the country.
“The standard of this event and the whole series is really high.” “It’s really good to see how your surfing rates against the other kids from around Australia,” Wheeler stated. In the 14 years and under girls division Amiya and Brodie Doyle (Coolangatta, QLD), Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) and Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW) continued their dominance.
Each day there’ll be a SNICKERS wave of the day awarded to one surfer who performs outstandingly on a single wave and the SNICKERS expression sessions will again feature, encouraging progressive moves from Australia’s hottest young talents.
On day two it was Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) who claimed the SNICKERS wave of the day after racking up an impressive 7.67 (out of a possible 10), whilst Noa Deane (Coolangatta, QLD) threw down an awesome 8.50 (out of a possible 10) to take the crown today.
The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by SNICKERS Coffs Harbour event runs from 3 October – 6 October 2008.
