Bill Caster honored at upcoming Sacred Craft surfboard show

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 October, 2008 : - - San Diego shaping icon Bill Caster will be honored at the SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo (October 11 & 12) during the 'Tribute to the Masters Shape-off' presented by Ice Nine Foam Works.

During the weekend long surfboard celebration, five established shapers from the coast of California and one from Florida will replicate a classic CASTER design in the Akeena Solar shaping bay. The winning shaper will receive $1000 and a full-page ad in SURFING magazine.

"Ice-Nine Foam Works is deeply honored to sponsor the 'Tribute to the Masters Shape-off' honoring Bill Caster," said Jon Stillman founder of Ice-Nine Foam works. "The Shape-off is a major event devoted to honoring those who hand-craft surfboards and Bill Caster was one of the best."

Bill Caster was an innovative San Diego shaper known for his progressive channel bottom rounded pins and humble demeanor. A quiet, confident and extremely skilled craftsman, Caster let his boards do the talking. At the peak of his commercial success in 1981 CASTER surfboards could be found up and down the coast of California and all along the Eastern seaboard. Sadly, Bill Caster died at the age of 44 from colon cancer.

Shapers honoring Bill Caster at this years' "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off" include Ward Coffey (Santa Cruz), Matt Calvani (Los Angeles), Timmy Patterson (Dana Point), Chris Christenson (San Diego), Ned McMahon (San Diego) and defending champion Ricky Carroll (Florida).

While professional shapers lay into the foam, professional surfers Brad Gerlach, Rob Machado & Pat O'Connell will shape up some boards for charity in the Coors Banquet Beer shaping bay. These unique one-of-a-kind boards will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Rob Machado Foundation, SurfAid International and the Surfrider Foundation respectively.

Informational, entertaining and relevant seminars will take place in the Bubble Gum Surf Wax seminar tent moderated by Sam George. Miki Dora biographer David Rensin, Swaylockian Lee Vanderhurst, Jeremy Sherwin, Tom Wegener, Robert August, Wingnut, Dan Malloy, Akeena Solar's Dirk Hosmer, Terry Martin, Drew Brophy, Harold Walker and Ice-Nine's Jon Stillman will be sharing their insight on a variety of surfboard related subjects.

As if that wasn't enough fun, surf movies will also be included in the weekend's festivities. Cyrus Sutton's Under The Sun, the Campbell Brothers' Bonzer: The Mothership, and Pure Frustration's Between The Lines will screen all weekend in the outside movie tent provided by Pure Frustration Productions.

On top of all that there is the "Craftsman Expression Session for Charity" presented by HANSEN BOARDROOM. Eight select craftsman and manufacturers have built exquisite surfboards for silent auction to benefit various charities. Top board will receive $1000 gift certificate to HANSEN's and a full page 'Design Forum' feature in SURFER Magazine.

Also, Patagonia has confirmed that Gerry Lopez will be in the Patagonia booth on Sunday to sign books and talk surfboards.

    ABOUT SACRED CRAFT
Nothing has defined the surfing experience more than that on which we ride the waves. Nothing defines the surfer more than his (or her) surfboard. So much more than a tool, the surfboard has become a philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth.
