Commonwealth Bank of Australia Saves The Day !

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 October, 2008 : - - The Local Business Banking division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia has announced that it will sponsor the 2008 Beachley Classic in a last minute sponsorship deal that has saved this major women’s surfing event held in Manly. The Beachley Classic, now in its third year, was hanging in the balance with sponsorship at an all time low.

The principal of the Beachley Classic 7 times ASP World Champion Layne Beachley said, ““CBA have saved the day. This has provided me with an enormous sense of relief and gratitude. In a world full of scared investors CBA have shown the courage to support our women’s event and in so doing, initiated their new policy of support and promotion of women within the banking services. I am so proud that CBA have chosen the Beachley Classic to launch their new female focussed direction.”

“I would also like to acknowledge the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation and Dairy Farmers who have come on as support partners to the event”.

The Beachley Classic, which Layne launched in 2006 is an ASP Women’s World Tour surfing event featuring the Top 17 ranked women surfers in the world, plus one Wildcard entrant taken from the Oakley Trials event. Countries competing include Australia, USA, Peru, South Africa and Brazil.

In 2008, with the Local business banking Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s financial assistance, the Beachley Classic is looking forward to emulating and further building on the success of the past two tournaments.

Executive General Manager Local Business Banking Mr Symon Brewis-Weston said “I recently attended Layne’s Aim For the Stars Foundation luncheon and was incredibly impressed with her commitment to supporting women in all their endeavours. What struck me particularly was the synergy between our new initiative in support of women within our Local Business Services and Layne’s determination to help women succeed. So we are thrilled to be able to sponsor the Beachley Classic as a symbol of support for women across the nation”.

The Beachley Classic is inadvertently positioned as one of the most crucial events of the calendar with 20% bonus points on offer.

Staged in conjunction with Commonwealth Bank, Events New South Wales, Arrive Alive and Beachley and with the support of Oakley, Dairy Farmers and the Manly Council, the Beachley Classic begins its waiting period on October 9, 2008 and runs through October 14th, 2008.
