Third Consecutive Day Off Ocean & Earth Pro Set For Start at 7.45 AM Thursday

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2008 : - - El Confitel, Gran Canaria - It has been another long day for all Round 1 competitors waiting to get the dust off their boards but officials had to call the event off for the third consecutive day. The Ocean & Earth Pro pres. La Caja de Canarias, an ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star event, has yet to commence at the world famous venue of El Confital and tomorrow's expected swell pick-up might get the first sixteen heats done.

Some three to four foot (1 to 1.2 meter) consistent waves are expected to reach the north shore of Gran Canaria during the night and the first pulses of that new swell already delivered a few small but defintely better waves than yesterday.

From tomorrow morning, the event will have to use its four remaining days and if El Confital does not allow any action over its reef, the event will go mobile to the good beachbreak of La Cicer that should be getting more swell.

"We are very confident of getting things running tomorrow morning very early at El Confital as all forecasts show a significant increase in swell," said contest director José. "If El Confital does not deliver its classic righthanders, we will move to the beachbreak and get Round 1 underway."

Round 1 features sixteen 4-man heats and ASP Top 45 members Aritz Aranburu (EUK), Daniel Ross (AUS) and Jay Thompson (AUS) will paddle out against low seeds the three Dream Tour surfers having lost their seed rights due to a late entry.

Looking at the European contingent, top seed and last year's finalist Jonathan Gonzalez (Tenerife, CNY) will surf in Round 2 against Hawaii's Nathan Carroll (HAW) in Heat 4. Gonzalez, who had a stellar start this year on the ASP WQS, suffered a serious injury to an ankle and is slowly getting back to its best level.
El Confital is definitely one of his favorite waves and he will be much expected by the usually cheering Canarian crowd when he paddles out.

Competitors and officials will meet at 7.30 AM (GMT+1) to assess conditions and hopefully witness some good contestable waves eventhough some side-shore winds are expected as well.

Day 2 of Ocean & Earth Pro Called Off - New Swell on the Way

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 October, 2008 : - - El Confitel, Gran Canaria - Conditions did not improve throughout the day and organisers and surfers agreed to call the second day of the ASP WQS 4-Star Ocean & Earth Pro presented by La Caja de Canarias off.

The world famous righthander of El Confital was not breaking today due to inconsistent conditions but with four days only needed to complete the event and five days remaining until the end, offcials are confident they will be able to send some heats out tomorrow afternoon.

Round 1 will feature sixteen 4-man battles before the top seeds of the event get their start. Among the ones supposed to start tomorrow will be ASP Top 45 members Dan Ross (AUS), Jay Thompson (AUS) and Aritz Aranburu (EUK) who entered the event late losing their seed rights.

A new swell is on its way and eventhough it should not be perfect, some good four to five foot (1.2 to 1.5 meter) waves should be giving our first contestants enough to surf tomorrow.

Ocean & Earth Pro Called off on Day 1 of Waiting Period

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 October, 2008 : - - El Confitel, Gran Canaria - The Ocean & Earth Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star event, officially started today but uncontestable two foot (0.5 meter) waves forced organisers to call the day off and have the 96-men field of competitors come back tomorrow at 9 AM.

The perfect barrels that have blessed the past three editions are expected to break again this week and give some of the world's best qualifiers another exciting experience in the crystal clear waters of El Confital, the famous righthander that has witnessed world class action for many years now. ASP Top 45 members Aritz Aranburu (EUK), Daniel Ross (AUS) and Jay Thompson (AUS) will be among those battling for the prestigious crown and will start in Round 1 after losing their seeding due to late entries.

Nic Muscroft (AUS), defending champion and top WQS contender who has surfed all ASP World Tour events this year thanks to a replacement wildcard, will be the number one seed in the Ocean & Earth Pro and will have to face some serious resistance from a large field of local experts who could possibly create big upsets when El Confital starts firing its classic barrels.

Multiple Canarian champion and event wildcard Felix Ortega (CNY) will be against Muscroft when Round 2 resumes more likely Thursday when the new swell starts hitting the north shore of Gran Canaria.

The Ocean & Earth Pro will be crucial for both international and European WQS ratings with no less than 1500 points going to the winner. Current Top 10 European surfers Hugo Savalli (REU), Romain Laulhe (FRA) and Glenn Hall (IRE) will be among those looking to secure a big result and keep their regional campaign going as all three of them have the opportunity to jump back on top of ratings if they win at El Confital.

Officials will meet at 9 AM tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make a new call.
