The Iron Lotus Part Two – Firing Surf In Amongst The Southern Mentawai Islands
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 October, 2008 : - - In this episode the South African crew of surfers and lone Australian Ry Craike head down to the southern breaks of the Mentawais and score some gold.
First up was two days of firing Macaroni’s, the perfect left that is on so many surfer’s favourite lists. At four-foot it is pretty much as perfect a wave as to be found anywhere in the world, and the boys lit up in amongst the perfection. Young Umhlanga goofy-foot Kyle Lane came into his own at Maccas and was blowing the tops off a few gems.
The natural-footed duo of Josh Redman and Brandon Jackson were also going mental in the razor-edged waves and blasting every wave on their backhand, but it was Australian goofy-footer Ry Craike who stole the show with some crazy airs and fins-free moves on his favourite wave in the whole world.

Then down in the Lance’s area, the crew managed to score a few nuggets at Lances Left, with even Clay Marzo making a guest appearance from another boat in the vicinity and scoring some sweet lefts and ripping on his forehand. The goofy footer who hails from Maui was in the hood with another crew and hooked up with the BRTV boys for a few fun sessions.
The final segment of The Iron Lotus trip consisted of awesome waves down at HT’s. The perfect right-breaking wave has a number of names and acronyms. They include HT’s which stands for Hollow Trees after a hollow tree that stood on the reef for years before falling over, and Lance’s Right, named after the wave’s initial discoverer Lance Knight from Australia.
The boys find the waves at HT’s not barrelling ferociously as the wave is renowned for doing, but instead is a high performance arena where they all get to completely cut loose with all their newest tricks. The natural-footers are all at their best during this segment, but Warwick ‘Wok’ Wright also scores some amazing waves and executes some radical turns on his backhand.
