Volcom Rhinofish VQS Event Set For Dairy Beach This Weekend
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2008 : - - The first VQS event of the year, scheduled for Cape Town earlier this year, was cancelled as the beaches were under attack by the triple whammy of the biggest storm, swell and tide in a couple of decades. The contest director wisely decided to postpone, and this weekend sees the first of the VQS Series take place in Durban.
The event, scheduled to take place at Dairy Beach, looks like it is going to be blessed with some clean swell and light to medium winds for most of the weekend, so there will undoubtedly be some bikinis on the beach amongst all the punts, reverses and other assorted beach activities lined up for the event.
Surfers to look out for in the Open Division are fomer VQS series winner and Dairy Beach old hand Shane Thorne, powerhouse surfer Josh Redman, perennial ripper Simon Nicholson, south coast stalwart Gavin Roberts, along with Casey Grant and Chris Leppan. Top girl surfers like Heidi Palmboom and Stacy Guy are sure to turn heads, while the Junior division will be contested amongst surfers like Haydn MacNicol from Scotties and Matthew Bromley from Kommetjie in the Cape.

Electric Visuals have come onboard for the entire series as a co-sponsor, and promise some rad product giveaways and involvement in all VQS surf events. "Electric is stoked to be on board with the VQS series," said Electric South Africa's Cheston Williams. "Competitors can expect loads of prizes and insane give-aways on the weekend. One of the prizes to be given away is the 'Electric Volt Thrower Move Of The Day.' This will be run on the Sunday of the event and the winner will receive a sick pair of Electric Sunglasses and R500 cold hard cash!"
Volcom Marketing Manager Swanky Swanepoel has also promised the usual fun and antics on the beach that is synonymous with the Totally Crustaceous Tour, but more of this will be revealed on the beach on the day. Also not to be forgotten, true to the Volcom style of 'let the kids ride free' there will be no entrance fee for the event, there is such a thing as free lunch for the competitors, and Red Bulls will be handed out to whoever needs a dose.
The cancelled Cape Town event, the Baboonfish, is set to run on November 15 and 16, and the finalists of all three qualifying events will be invited to the VQS Finals to be held in Durban early next year. This event will be full-on as the prize is a free ticket to the US of A for the VQS World Championships at Newport Beach, California. The event will also be filmed for an episode of the Volcom TV Show, "Let The Kids Ride Free TV' - coming soon to a television set near you.
