Maresia Surf International starts with good waves at Brava Beach of Itajai    > Portuguese embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2008 : - - Itajai, Brazil -- The second edition of the Maresia Surf International in Itajai began on this Tuesday in good waves of 3 to 5 feet at the beautiful Brava Beach. In the first heat of the day, started at 9am, Brazilians Magno Pacheco and Flavio Costa won the first two places to move to the second round.

After that the Australian Alex Chacon won the second heat, and in the third heat, the best of the day, Brazilian Anselmo Correia fired posting the highest heat score of the Maresia Surf International so far.

He completed a great wave (9,17 score) with three strong maneuvers that ensured the victory by 16.50 points (out of a possible 20), posting the two records of the event so far. "I woke up at 6am to come here and during the free surf I surfed really good waves, than I went very confident to my heat. My goal in this event is to win another contest here in Santa Catarina.

I won a WQS event in Mole Beach at Florianopolis in 2001 and I hope to win another one, surfing calm and with no pressure, just letting the things happen" said Anselmo, who also spoke about the best wave so far of the Maresia Surf International.

“There are great waves out there and if you get a perfect left, for sure that it will be a high-score. I was impressed with the level of surfing in my heat, because all the surfers found good scores. Thank god that wave came to me in the end. I completed a first good maneuver, than the wave formed again and I hit an even stronger to finish well to take a 9.17 points (out of a possible 10) of judges that left me very happy" described Anselmo Correia.

The battle for the second place in third heat also was too intense and defined only in the final seconds with a fantastic turnaround from Brazilian Alon Campestrini on another Brazilian Alejo Muniz.

"I surfed five contests without passing a heat and I was already thinking that would be happen again, but I got that wave in the end and get the score, it was very exciting. Contests in our Home Town are always nice, everybody cheering for us, so I hope that I can use this positive energy to go very high in this event" said Campestrini, the surfer from Balneario Camboriu that always trains in Brava Beach.

Most foreigners surfers enrolled in Maresia Surf International just will start surfing in Round of 96. But some of them have already competed in the first day of the event, one of them was the Australian Alex Chacon winner of the second heat and the American Shey Yates, who completed a big 360 aerial in his last wave in the last 20 seconds of the heat. In the middle of the day a strong south wind started in Brava Beach, forcing the suspension of the competition in the 14th heat of Round of 144.

"The heat was a little stressful because just a few sets came during the heat, but in the end I found a good one to guarantee my ticket into the next round" said Shey Yates, who did not know Brazil. "This is my first time here in Brazil and I am really enjoying this beautiful beach with a plenty of vegetation and with great waves and nice barrels. I also had a great free surfing here this morning” said the young American with 21 years old.

7AM CALL – Ten heats remain before the Round of 144 is completed and the competition will re-start tomorrow morning at 7am and 20 heats are scheduled for the second day of the Maresia Surf International.

OPEN TITLE – The last winner of the Maresia Surf International, Brazilian Adriano de Souza, will not compete in the event this year, Adriano still in treatment of a contusion suffered last week during the WQS event at Arpoador Beach in Rio de Janeiro and will not defend the title in the event. The American Jesse Heilman replaced him. Adriano started doing physical therapy to try to get into full physical conditions to defend his fifth place in the ASP Men’s World Tour, in the Brazilian WCT stop in Imbituba.

Maresia Surf International começa com boas ondas na Praia Brava de Itajaí

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2008 : - - Itajai, Brazil -- A segunda edição do Maresia Surf International em Itajaí começou na terça-feira em boas ondas de 1,5 metro de altura na paradisíaca Praia Brava. Na primeira bateria, iniciada as 9 horas, o paulista Magno Pacheco e o baiano Flávio Costa conquistaram as duas primeiras vagas para enfrentar os cabeças-de-chave da segunda fase.

O australiano Alex Chacon venceu a segunda bateria, mas a terceira foi a disputa mais bonita do dia, com o carioca Anselmo Correia registrando os primeiros recordes do ano no Maresia Surf International.

Ele arrancou nota 9,17 com três fortes manobras numa ótima onda que garantiu a vitória por 16,50 pontos, as marcas a serem batidas durante esta semana na linda Praia Brava de Itajaí. “Acordei 6 horas da manhã para vir pra cá e peguei boas ondas durante os treinos, aí entrei na bateria confiante em pegar as ondas para tentar conquistar outro bom resultado aqui em Santa Catarina.

Venci uma etapa do WQS na Praia Mole de Floripa (em 2001) e espero voltar à velha forma de conseguir bons resultados. Estou surfando tranqüilo, sem nenhuma pressão por ranking ou resultado, então só estou deixando as coisas acontecerem”, contou Anselmo, que também falou sobre a melhor onda do campeonato que valeu o recorde de nota do Maresia Surf International.

“Tem altas ondas e quando entram as esquerdas perfeitas pode ter certeza que vai sair high-score (nota alta). Eu fiquei impressionado com o nível da minha bateria, pois todos começaram com notas altas e graças a Deus veio a onda salvadora no final. Ela surgiu lá fora, ei, fui lá embaixo, cavei, dei a primeira manobra, ela formou de novo e acertei uma mais forte ainda e finalizei bem a junção para tirar um 9,17 dos juízes que me deixou muito feliz”, descreveu Correia.

A batalha pela segunda vaga na bateria também foi intensa e só definida nos segundos finais com uma virada fantástica de Alon Campestrini sobre outro catarinense, Alejo Muniz, destaque na etapa encerrada domingo na Praia do Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro. “Eu estava cinco campeonatos sem passar bateria e já estava pensando que ia acontecer de novo, mas aí veio aquela onda ali da virada no final que foi muito emocionante.

Campeonato em casa é só alegria, todo mundo torcendo aí pra gente, passando energia positiva e quero ver se consigo ir longe neste campeonato”, deseja Alon Campestrini, surfista de Balneário Camboriú que conhece bem as ondas da Praia Brava, onde sempre treina.

A maioria dos estrangeiros inscritos no Maresia Surf International faz parte da lista dos 48 cabeças-de-chave da segunda fase. Mas, alguns já entraram no primeiro dia, como o australiano Alex Chacon que estreou com vitória no segundo confronto do dia e o norte-americano Shey Yates, que na última onda garantiu a classificação em segundo lugar contra três brasileiros na décima das vinte baterias programadas para o primeiro dia, antes do vento sul entrar forte na Praia Brava e forçar a interrupção do campeonato na 14.a bateria.

“A bateria foi um pouco estressante porque entrou poucas ondas, mas no final achei uma boa para garantir minha passagem para a próxima fase”, falou Shey Yates, que não conhecia o Brasil. “É a primeira vez que venho para o Brasil e estou gostando muito, essa praia aqui é muito bonita com bastante vegetação e consegui pegar bons tubos nos treinos que fiz de manhã, antes de começar o campeonato”, elogiou o jovem norte-americano de apenas 21 anos de idade.

CHAMADA AS 7:00 HORAS – O temido vento sul entrou rasgando por volta das 15 horas na Praia Brava e provocou a interrupção da primeira fase. Estavam programadas as vinte primeiras baterias e a competição foi paralizada na 14.a. A 15.a já foi confirmada para ser iniciada as 7 horas da quarta-feira.

Os dois primeiros colocados de cada bateria avançam para a segunda fase, quando os 135.000 dólares oferecidos no Maresia Surf International começam a ser distribuídos. A premiação vai de 500 dólares para os últimos colocados nessa segunda fase, até os 15.000 dólares para o campeão.

TÍTULO EM ABERTO - Já a grande baixa do Maresia Surf International é o paulista Adriano de Souza, que ainda está em tratamento da contusão sofrida semana passada durante a etapa do WQS do Rio de Janeiro na Praia do Arpoador e não poderá defender o título de campeão conquistado no ano passado em Itajaí.

Ele já estava escalado como cabeça-de-chave da primeira bateria da segunda fase e acabou sendo substituído pelo norte-americano Jesse Heilman. A pancada com a prancha na panturrilha da perna direita ainda está bastante dolorida e ele está fazendo fisioterapia para tentar chegar em plenas condições físicas para defender a quinta posição no ranking mundial na etapa brasileira do WCT em Imbituba.
