Tarryn Chudleigh stars for SA team on Day 3 of ISA World Surfing Games in Portugal
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2008 : - - Tarryn Chudleigh was the star performer for the South African surfing team as the women took to the surf for the first time on Day 3 of the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games at Costa de Caparica in Portugal.
The teenaged multiple SA age-group champion from Kommetjie showed no nerves despite appearing in her first World Surfing Games, charging to two convincing heats victories and advancing to the last 12 in the qualifying stream of the double elimination format.
Teammate Chantelle Rautenbach from Melkbosstrand started her campaign in fine form, racking up rides of 7.83 and 6.50 to easily win her opening encounter. But the recently crowned SA U18 champion came up just short in Round 2 where she placed third behind Anali Gomez (Peru) and Nataly Bernold (Costa Rica) to drop into the repecharge rounds.
The seeding sees Chudleigh avoid the outstanding Australian duo of Sally Fitzgibbons, winner of the ISA Junior Women’s title at the same venue in Portugal last year, and ASP World Tour member Claire Bevilacqua. The South African faces two French girls and an American in Round 3 with the top two progressing to the last six in the winner’s stream.
SA’s Klee Strachan and team captain Ryan Payne both struggled to find waves with high scoring potential in Round 3 action in the men’s surfing. Both placed fourth in their respective heats and joined teammates Devyn Mattheys (EL) and Matthew Kruger (Durban) in the repecharge rounds.
Strachan (Winkelspruit) only rode two waves during his 20 minute heat, scoring 2.10 and 4.27 to finish well behind heat winner CJ Hobgood (USA), Maz Quinn (NZL) and Charley Martin (FRA). Payne (St Francis Bay) managed three rides but still needed a combination of scores totaling 13.94 to earn second place and avoid the grueling repecharge rounds.
Tamaroa McComb from Tahiti, winner of the ISA U16 title in France earlier this year, was the day’s standout, posting near perfect scores of 9.17 and 9.0, the highest of the event to date, to cruise into the last 16 in the men’s winner’s stream.
Wednesday’s action at the ISA World Surfing Games includes:
Open Men Repecharge Round 2 and 3 (SA’s Devyn Mattheys & Matthew Kruger) Bodyboard Men Repecharge Round 1 and 2 Bodyboard Men Main Event Round 2 (SA’s Dave Lee & Sacha Specker) Bodyboard Women Main Event Round 2 (SA’s Pamela Bowren) Longboard Repecharge 1
Matthew Moir, who has already qualified for the last eight in the Longboard event, gets another day off. Action from the event, which runs until Sunday 19 October, is broadcast live over the internet. The South African team's attendance at the event is supported by funding from the National Lottery Board.
