6-Star Estoril Coast Pro Portugal kicks off today      > Portuguese embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2008 : - - Estoril Coastline received today a lot of national and international stars, as the ESTORIL COAST PRO, the WQS 6 stars stop, kicked off today.  On this first day, the stop was moved from Carcavelos to Guincho. The waves were 2 feet high, although the surfers were challenged in the windy conditions.

Headlines from first day:
The Australian Clancy Dawson was the happiest surfer as he reached a 15.84, the best score of the day. Simon Marchand, one of the greatest French surfers, made the second best: an 8.0 and a 7.4 wave. This athlete, who usually surfs in Portugal, mentioned: “The wind was hard, but my performance was pretty positive. My participation in the WQS series has been improving my surf. Now I’m dreaming to reach the WCT!”

Some of the Portuguese surfers began competing in this first round. Miguel Ximenez had a good performance, and made it through on first place, to the next round. “My expectations are high. I hope to compete in Carcavelos tomorrow with better conditions.” Alexandre Ferreira, a local from Guincho, has succeeded too, this morning.

António Pedro, contest director, from Alfarroba, has good perspectives to the next five days of ESTORIL COAST PRO: “Another WQS 6 stars in Portugal is very exciting to the Portuguese surf and surfers. Today we went to Guincho, looking for the best conditions, but tomorrow we hope return to the excellent waves that Carcavelos usually offers. We’ll see!”

Tomorrow starts the second round of ESTORIL COAST PRO. Tiago Pires will compete in the first heat of the day, in a crucial stop to his WCT maintenance. It’s also time for Nathaniel Curran, the actual WQS leader; Tim Boal and Nic Muscroft to prove their best in the Portuguese waves.

The ESTORIL COAST PRO is strongly sponsored by Turismo de Portugal/Estoril, along with Câmara Municipal de Cascais (Cascais City Hall), and Ericeira Surf Shop. Sponsors like Nokia, B!, Tmn and Jeep also provide huge support.  This competition is organized by Alfarroba, with help from Sapo.pt, Pólen Surfboards, Fonte Viva, LG Computers, Konica Minolta, Red Bull, Vitaminas, Hotel Praia Mar, Restart and ASP Europe – Association of Surfing Professionals.

To help on the event’s diffusion, organization counts with extra help from radio MegaFm, newspaper Destak, tv channel Sport Tv, tv programme Zona Radical, websites Surf.Sapo.Pt, Conquilha.com and magazines FreeSurf and Bit.

Primeira ronda do Estoril Coast Pro no guincho

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2008 : - - Começou hoje o ESTORIL COAST PRO, a segunda etapa de seis estrelas do WQS realizada em solo português. A linha do Estoril recebe assim uma chuva de estrelas nacionais e internacionais. Neste primeiro dia, o campeonato mudou-se da Praia de Carcavelos e foi em direcção às boas condições oferecidas pelo Guincho. Ondas com cerca de um metro e algum vento proporcionaram um desafio ainda maior aos surfistas que iniciaram o campeonato.

Destaque esta manhã para a grande promessa do surf Francês, Simon Marchand, que obteve uma das melhores pontuações do dia. Este atleta, habituado a surfar em terras lusas, conseguiu duas boas ondas de 8.0 e 7.4. “As condições não estavam fáceis por causa do vento, mas foi muito positiva esta minha primeira prestação.

Sinto que a minha participação no WQS tem vindo a enriquecer, cada vez mais, o meu surf e sonho chegar ao WCT!”. Foi grande o número de participações portuguesas no primeiro round. Miguel Ximenez sobressaiu, conseguindo seguir para a próxima ronda em primeiro lugar. “Estou com expectativas que o mar melhore esta semana e que se façam algumas baterias em Carcavelos. Estou a pensar bateria a bateria, tentando chegar o mais longe possível neste campeonato.” Também Alexandre Ferreira, a surfar em casa, conseguiu apuramento para a ronda seguinte.

O português David Luís não teve tanta sorte, perdendo para Marchand e para o Sul-Africano Klee Strachan. No entanto, mostrou-se muito entusiasmado com a sua participação: “Estar numa etapa do WQS é muito bom para mim. A competição a este nível é uma oportunidade para me superar cada vez mais e atacar com força o título nacional do próximo ano”.

Alguns atletas falharam as suas baterias no primeiro dia de competição, entre eles o jovem Frederico Morais, que assim perdeu uma boa oportunidade para ganhar experiência num campeonato deste nível. António Pedro da Alfarroba, director da prova, tem boas perspectivas para estes próximos cinco dias decampeonato: “Ter mais uma etapa do WQS de seis estrelas em Portugal é sempre muito positivo para o surf português.

Hoje viemos para o Guincho à procura de melhores condições, mas amanhã já esperamos regressar às excelentes ondas que Carcavelos tem para oferecer.” Amanhã segue a segunda ronda do campeonato onde, logo na primeira bateria da manhã, vai entrar em competição o atleta Tiago Pires, numa etapa decisiva para sua manutenção no WCT do próximo ano.
