SIMA HR BOOT CAMP: Registration Deadline Tomorrow

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 October, 2008 : - - Aliso Viejo, Ca -- It’s last call to register for SIMA HR Boot Camp, the fourth SIMA Boot Camp in the newest SIMA educational series. Hurry up and enlist your crew today!  The deadline to register is tomorrow, Friday, October 24.

SIMA HR Boot Camp, set for Tuesday, October 28, 2008, will train all levels of employees on the lawful practices of delicate HR issues and the best ways to practically execute the management of employees in the surf industry.  Bring your crew for a down and dirty half-day of hot topics ranging from sexual harassment and problem employees to requirements for independent contractors.

This half-day event at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Calif., running from noon – 4 p.m., will feature two seminars and lunch.  Topics will include:

Session 1: Sexual Harassment in the Workplace - This session will highlight both legal requirements and practical advice regarding sexual harassment. Robert will discuss state and federal law regarding the definition of sexual harassment and what these definitions mean in everyday work life.

Using illustrative cases and drawing from real-life examples, Robert will also highlight the legal and personal consequences of sexual harassment, what is required of employers and supervisors, and ways to reduce/prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This seminar will last 2 hours and thus will satisfy the requirements for mandatory sexual harassment training of supervisors under California law. Speaker: Robert Gerard / Friedman Stroffe & Gerard, P.C.

Session 2: Employees vs. Independent Contractors – This session will walk through the legal requirements and implications of having employees vs. independent contractors, including why just calling someone an independent contractor and issuing them an IRS Form 1099 does not make them an independent contractor.

Samantha will also discuss other topics that are relevant to every company, including how to deal with problem employees and the latest on non-competition agreements in California. Speaker: Samantha Hoffman / Jackson Lewis LLP

The cost of the event is $50 per person for SIMA members and $85 per person for non-SIMA members.  Cost includes both seminars, as well as a seminar workbook and lunch provided by Corner Bakery.  For registration materials and more information, please contact Travis Wilkerson, SIMA Membership Director at travis@sima.com or 949.366.1164 x 3.  The deadline to register is Friday, October 24.

For all press inquiries please contact Mandy Johnson at mandy@sima.com.

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is the official working trade association of more than 300 surf industry suppliers. Founded in 1989, SIMA is a non-profit organization that serves to promote awareness of the surf industry and participation in the sport of surfing through public relations efforts and a variety of services, educational programs and research.

In addition, SIMA actively supports oceanic environmental efforts through its 501(c)(3) charitable environmental foundation, the SIMA Environmental Fund. In the past 18 years, SIMA's Environmental Fund has raised more than $4.5 million for environmental groups seeking to protect the world's oceans, beaches and waves.

The SIMA Humanitarian Fund, also a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, was established in 2006 to award grants to various surf or boardsport related social and humanitarian non-profit organizations whose efforts are focused on improving the quality of life, health and/or welfare of people.
