New names on the trophies at the Jesus Long Board Classic – 18th and 19th October 2008 ( Polzeath )
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 October, 2008 : - - The 2008 Jesus Surf Series, came to a close, with some great surfing, and good weather at Polzeath for the ‘Jesus Longboard Classic’. The second running of this event took place in 2 - 3ft choppy waves, with some October sunshine, over the weekend of 18th and 19th October.
The event attracted around 45 competitors in 4 divisions, including some of the UK’s top longboarders in each division. The event was organised and run by Christian Surfers UK, and supported by ‘The Tubestation’, Polzeath and ‘nineplus’.
Over 50 volunteers from around the country assisted in the smooth running of the event, and the evening entertainment at the ‘Tubestation’ was the Cornish premiere of the new movie ‘Walking on Water’. Bristol based ‘Transition’ provided the tunes for the weekend.
With £1000 up for grabs, and money for all finalists the event was always going to be keenly contested. In the ladies division Newquay’s Candice O’Donnell in her 1st ‘Jesus’ Contest took the ladies final, ahead of last years winner Dominque Kent ( Newquay ) and St Agnes’s Nicola Bunt.

In the Junior Division ( Under 18 ) Michael Lay from St Just, took the title just ahead of Matt Travis from Pendeen. A special mention should be made of Tom Cross who travelled all the way down from Yorkshire to take 3rd place. Bude’s Liam Meneer was 4th.
The Masters division was a real tightly contested event all the way through with 1st place going to Callington’s Mark Goodright, improving on his 3rd place in 2007. Rich Unsworth ( Northam ) took 2nd ahead of North Devon’s Mr ‘Hotdogger’ Norman Wright, and Martin Davies from Wadebridge
In a highly stacked Open final, with the heat lead changing throughout, Adam Griffiths ( Newquay ) took the title and cheque for £250, ahead of Sennen’s Sam Bleakley. Ben Haworth was 3rd and Perranporth’s Nico Keruzec 4th. Both Adam and Sam had also surfed through an amazingly strong semi final where they defeated top contenders James Parry, and Richard Balding.
The presentation took place on the newly completed decking, in front of the converted ‘Tubestation’ Church, with its half pipe skate ramps, plasma screens and café. With some great feedback from the competitors it is hoped the event for 2009 can be even bigger.

Before the contest started on the Sunday, there was a very informal ‘Surfers Blessing’ at the ‘Tubestation’, before the semi-finals and finals got underway. Contest Director, Phil Williams, head of Christian Surfers UK says, “Following on from last years amazing surf and weather, was always going to be tough, but this years event did not let us down. There was a great atmosphere throughout the weekend, and with the high standard of surfing, and hospitality offered by the ‘Tubestation’ every one seemed to have enjoyed themselves. The partnership with Tubestation and ‘nineplus’ worked really well, and the volunteers did a brilliant job”
A big thanks to all the Competitors for their support, and the helpers for working tirelessly throughout the weekend. Thanks also to Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club, North Cornwall Council, BLU and Corduroy lines for their continued support. A final big thanks to God for the waves and location, and the local surfers for sharing the waves throughout the weekend.
