Honours go to Durban High School and Sun Valley Primary School in the 2008 Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 October, 2008 : - - Muizenberg Pavilion provided perfect conditions for the annual Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships at the weekend October 25/26 as 16 schools from all parts of the country participated in one of the longest running events on the Surfing South Africa calendar.

Perfect weather and contestable 3 foot surf  were ideal conditions for the team format used in this event as once again Durban High School showed their class and dominated the Main final, successfully defending the title they won at the same venue in 2007.

The powerful DHS side, comprising an all star lineup of Chad du Toit, Scott le Fevre, Jason Pender, Kane Bennewith, David van Zyl and Roger Allison posted a massive score of 132.7 to the 107.4 of second placed Fellowship College of Melkbosstrand.

Fellowship College, who were making their first appearance at the SA Schools Championships, were made up of an all Boland provincial lineup headed by JJ Rattey, brothers Jean and Leon du Preez, Justin Torode and Jeandre Blignault.

Durban’s Northwood High school of Devin Lane, Matthew Baker, Bruce Colingwood, Daniel de Sousa, Tyron Ray and Justin Shaw scored 106.2 points to take third while the young Silvermine Academy High School team led by Western Province star Mikey February plus Oliver Lennard, Daniel Zinn, Tao Farren, Liam Dickens and Jason Dippenaar, came fourth on 103.2 points.

Woodridge College from the Eastern Cape and Glenwood High of Durban were joint fifth and Umzumbe High, Ocean View High and Kommetjie Primary finished in joint seventh place. The Primary School Final was won for a second year in a row by Sun Valley Primary comprising Kirsty Flanagan, Thomas Nel, Sam Forder as well as Alex and Stephen Jamieson.

Kommetjie Primary was second, Fish Hoek Primary came third and Lantana Primary from Strandfontein was fourth. For the second year in a row KZN star Chad du Toit of DHS, was named Surfer of the Contest for his 9.5 ride in the Final and average wave score of over 7 points throughout the event.

In a genuine sporting gesture which brought the tournament to a fitting conclusion the DHS side handed their prizes of Reef Wetsuit boardbags to the members of the Ocean View High School who are based in a marginalised community in the Kommetjie area.

The Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships is a team event and the traditional individual heats are not held. Teams of five surfers compete against each other in 45 minute heats and the teams with the highest total scores advance through each round to the final.

Primary schools and High schools compete against each other in the Main event but separate High and Primary School Finals are held. The Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships was presented by Surfing South Africa. Heat results are posted on surfingsouthafrica.co.za
