Gilmore Wins Back-to-Back Titles in Peru to Regain ASP Ratings Lead       > Espanol abajo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 November, 2008 : - - Piscina, Peru -- Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and defending event champion, collected her second consecutive win in Peru today, defeating Silvana Lima (BRA), 24, to claim the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru presented by Rip Curl as well as the ratings lead on the ASP Women’s World Tour.

Event No. 6 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru pres. by Rip Curl relocated from the primary venue in Mancora this morning to Piscina, an hour and a half south, where swell was running in the three-to-four foot (1.5 metre) range.

After building momentum throughout the day, Gilmore peaked in the Final, posting the highest heat total of the event, a 16.10 out of a possible 20, with brilliant flair and power on her backhand, to claim her second consecutive event title in Peru.

“I am so stoked right now,” Gilmore said. “I love coming to Peru. The waves are always really fun and the people are so passionate about their surfing. I came here confident that I could get a result and to come out on top is just fantastic.”

After stumbling with an equal 9th at the last ASP Women’s World Tour event in Sydney, Gilmore’s win today sees the young natural-footer back on top of the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings and on course to defend her ASP Women’s World Title.

“I think Sydney was good for me in that it motivated me to refocus on my primary goal which is to win another ASP Women’s World Tour,” Gilmore said. “Now that I’m ahead, I feel great, but I know there are still two more events and a lot can happen. I excited for Hawaii and am looking forward to a great end of the year.”

Lima, current No. 4 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, was in brilliant form all day, even netting an 7.70 out of a possible 10 in the Final, but it wasn’t enough to stop a rampaging Gilmore. “I am very happy with my performance today,” Lima said. “I felt like I was surfing well and that my equipment was working really good. It is a shame that I couldn’t win in the Final, but I am happy with my result.”

Today’s runner-up finish marks Lima’s second in two events (she finished runner-up at the last event in Sydney), and the progressive natural-footer rockets up to 4th on the ASP Women’s World Tour. “I really want to win an event one of these days, but Steph (Gilmore) was ripping,” Lima said. “I am still very happy with my result and my place in the ratings. I don’t know what Hawaii will hold for me, but I am looking forward to the events.”

Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, current No. 7 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, scored the upset of the day, defeating former ratings leader and event favorite Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, in the Quarterfinals.

“Sofia (Mulanovich) is an incredible surfer and we were surfing at Lobitos this morning and she was surfing amazing, even with an injured foot,” Woods said. “Fortunately I got a couple of good ones off the bat and was able to maintain the lead. It’s a great win for me and my first Semifinals of the year so I’m stoked.”

Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 3 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, opened up her Semifinal heat with a blistering 9.00 out of a possible 10, but was unable to halt the assault of eventual winner Gilmore.

“It’s frustrating when you open up the heat with a good wave and can’t back it up,” Beachley said. “I guess I am frustrated a bit more because I lost to Steph (Gilmore) and I had her and let her get away from me. It’s really frustrating.”

While it appears that Gilmore and Mulanovich are running away with the race for the ASP Women’s World Title, Beachley is still motivated to perform in Hawaii.

“I excited to get to Hawaii and I hope we get Sunset at 20 feet and Honolua at 15 feet,” Beachley said. “Hawaii is my old stomping ground and it’s where I feel like I’ve cemented a place for myself and I’m motivated by the desire to win and I’m looking forward to the winter.”

The next stop on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour is the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, Hawaii from November 24 – December 6, 2008.

Stephanie Gilmore ganó el Movistar Classic Máncora Perú

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 November, 2008 : - - Piscina, Peru --  La australiana Stephanie Gilmore se llevó esta tarde por segundo año consecutivo el Movistar Classic, que ante la carencia de olas tuvo que mudarse de la playa Máncora a Lobitos para disputar la Final de esta sexta parada del Campeonato Mundial de Surf. Sofía Mulanovich es ahora segunda y sus posibilidades de coronarse siguen intactas.

Con esta victoria, la australiana pasa a comandar las posiciones de la WCT con 5,148 puntos, mientras la peruana Sofía Mulanovich pasó al segundo puesto con 4,963.

El evento, presentado por Rip Curl, tuvo momentos de increíble surf, sobre todo en la gran final que disputó Gilmore frente a la brasileña Silvana Lima. Gilmore se llevó el título al sumar 16.10 contra los 14.70 de su rival. Lima escaló a la cuarta ubicación de la temporada con 4,166 unidades, mientras Beachley mantiene la tercera posición con 4,454.

“Estoy realmente feliz por este resultado. Amo venir al Perú porque su gente le pone mucha emoción al surf y las olas acá siempre son divertidas. Una la pasa muy bien. Estaba convencida que me esperaba algo bueno y sobre todo recuperar la punta del campeonato es fantástico,” señaló la ganadora, mientras recibía las felicitaciones de los aficionados peruanos que reconocieron su justa victoria.

“Lo que me sucedió en Sydney me sirvió de mucho para replantear mi performance y enfocarme en el objetivo de volver a ganar el título mundial de la WCT. Me siento súper emocionada por estar otra vez en la cima y más por lo que viene de aquí en adelante en Hawai, pero también soy consciente que nada está dicho y hay que pelear la corona hasta el final,” agregó.

Las australianas Layne Beachley y Rebecca Woods, quienes perdieron en las Semifinales ante Gilmore y Lima, tuvieron también momentos brillantes en las aguas de la playa Piscinas, sobre todo Woods, quien desembarcó de la punta a la peruana Mulanovich con un par de buenas olas en la ronda de los Cuartos de Final.

La penúltima cita será a partir del 24 de noviembre en Sunset Beach, Hawai, donde los 185 puntos de ventaja de Gilmore sobre Mulanovich no serán ninguna garantía para la actual puntera de las clasificaciones. Además, Beachley y Lima mantienen intactas sus posibilidades para meterse en este duelo entre la australiana y la peruana.

SOFÍA MULANOVICH SE QUEDÓ EN LOS CUARTOS DE FINAL

En Lobitos, Sofía Mulanovich perdió ante la australiana Rebecca Woods, quien sumó 11.5 puntos para superar los 9.83 logrados por ‘Sofi’. El cambio de playa y la lesión que tenía en el tobillo habrían afectado el rendimiento de nuestra campeona, quien llegó a los Cuartos de Final en el Mundial Femenino de Surf realizado en el Perú.

Luego de dejar Máncora, la competición se realizó en la playa Piscinas, ubicada en la zona de Lobitos, también en Piura. En este escenario, con olas de mayor tamaño en comparación con las de Máncora, Sofía solo pudo alcanzar 9.83 puntos, los que fueron insuficientes ante los11.5 logrados por la australiana Rebecca Woods.

Durante su participación, al tratar de abordar una ola, ‘Sofi’ cayó estrepitosamente y afectó aun más su lesión al tobillo. En los últimos minutos de su serie, la tablista peruana sufrió mucho para recuperar su performance.

Ofuscada, Sofía, salió del mar sin declarar a la prensa. Fue inmediatamente al tópico para ponerse hielo en el tobillo afectado y se tomó unos quince minutos para ahogar a solas su impotencia, informó desde el lugar Patrick Espejo, enviado especial de El Comercio. Luego trató de poner su mejor cara y atendió a los periodistas. “Me voy con rabia por no haber podido ganar en mi país, pero con un tobillo así es imposible hacer más.”

En tanto, Woods ahora esperará la competencia con la brasileña Silvana Lima en la primera Semifinal. Lima venció en su tanda a Karina Petroni, de Estados Unidos.

Asimismo, Stephanie Gilmore (Australia) también clasificó a semifinales y con estos resultados se ubica como la número uno del mundo. Podría repetir la conquista del título que logró en Máncora en el 2007.

Ahora, a Sofía le quedan dos fechas para revertir esta situación y quedarse con el título mundial. Ambas se realizarán en las playas de Oahu y Maui (Hawai, Estados Unidos).
