Jenkins dominates day one of Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 November, 2008 : - - Elouera Beach, NSW -- Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage lit up Elouera Beach today as the finest crop of juniors dominated day one in style. After being postponed during September due to gruesome weather and surf conditions, day one of Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage saw the hottest junior competitors from south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in the north, to Kiama in the south on fire at Cronulla.
Making the most of the rescheduled event was Rory Jenkins (Cronulla, NSW) who was on song throughout the opening rounds of the event. Jenkins picked up where he left off last weekend, continuing his excellent form - dominating both his opening day heats. “I’m so pleased with how I surfed today, it is great to be able to surf against Kurt and Max and to beat both of them is great for my confidence,” he said.
Carrying a lower seed into the event, meaning he had to face the event’s top two seeded surfers, Max Ayshford (Matraville, NSW) and Kurt Kiggins (Cronulla, NSW) - Jenkins posted strong wins against his more fancied opponents. “I try to be as positive as I can surfing against the older guys and really focus on gaining momentum through my heats,” Jenkins admitted.
Jenkins now sits in a commanding position atop the 16 years and under leaderboard going into the final day of competition. Contrasting other surfing competitions, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage allows competitors (16 years and under) to surf three heats each without elimination.
Unlike the run of the mill surfing competition, each surfer’s two highest scoring rides from each heat are added together, along with bonus points awarded according to the position the competitor finishes in each heat. “The Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage format is really good,” Jenkins continued.
“Its a good change to other comps and with all the activities running during the day, the event is super fun.” Other surfers who were impressive form were Jarrod Campbell (Cronulla, NSW), Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW) and Troy Langendoen (Oak Flats, NSW), who all surfed with flair and power on the opening day at Elouera.
The event, which is the last Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage event staged throughout the year, is a qualifying event for the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Curl Curl in December.
In the 16 years and under girls division it was Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW) and Skye Burgess (Lake Heights, NSW) who were leading the charge, both winning their respective heats to position themselves on-top of the all important leaderboard. Whilst in the 13 years and under boys division it was Chris Robertson (Cronulla); Josh Szele (Warilla) and Harrison Martin (Cronulla) who were in best of form.
Competition starts at 8am on both days for each of the four divisions – girls and boys 13 and under and girls and boys 16 and under with finals expected to be in the water around 12pm. There will also be a host of beach activities and challenges with great prizes taking place over the weekend so be sure to get down to Cronulla Beach this weekend.
