Australian Junior Surfing Titles 2008 set for classic waves at Margaret River WA
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2008 : - - Australia’s best male and female under 18 and 16 year old surfers are fine tuning their performance levels in readiness for the annual Australian Junior Surfing Titles which will begin on December 1st and run through to December 7th at Margaret River in Western Australia.
This event is loaded with a history possibly second to none, with numerous winners going onto elite professional surfing careers which includes multiple world champion titles in both Men’s and Women’s.
Try these for just a few previous Australian Champions – Tom Carroll, Pam Burridge, Wayne Lynch, Joel Parkinson, and Stephanie Gilmore – The list of Australian surfing royalty born to a significant degree from this event goes on and on and when the one hundred and fifty plus elite competitors descend on Margaret River for this years event they’ll be hoping to realize a dream of every young Australian surfer by winning a prestigious Australian Junior Surfing Title.
The competitors have been selected by the states following a rigorous season of junior surfing and having made their state teams have undergone high level coaching from their respective state coaching directors to prepare them for what will be their toughest challenge in the esteemed careers to date.
NSW go into the event as the champion junior team lead by Dean Bowen (Geroa/NSW) and Kirby Wright (Culburra/NSW). One of the most interesting competitors at this event is certain to be young South Coast NSW surfer Tyler Wright (Culburra/Sth Coast NSW) who will contest the under 16 girls division.
Wright is fresh off an amazing win at the ASP World Tour Beachley Classic in Sydney last month where she defeated the world’s best and as a 14 year old created history by becoming the youngest ever to win an ASP world tour event.
While that win will give her confidence, she’s certain to know that to win this Australian Title will be no easy task – Many of her competitors like Ellie Jean Coffey (Crescent Head/NSW) and Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island/Vic) have competed against Tyler at national events over the past few years and have beaten her on occasions.
The list of all surfers competing is attached and when you scan the names across all divisions you quickly realize the quality of this event. Excellent performances at this event also go a long way into formulating the Australian Junior Team, known as Team Australia, which will compete in the ISA World Junior Titles in 2009.
This year’s event is extremely fortunate to be allowed to run at the classic Margaret River outer reef break.
As a surfing reserve the break limits competition days annually and for this event to surf here is indicative of it’s importance to Australian surfing with Surfing Australia Events Manager, Dane Jordan, stating “Margaret River is one of the most recognised big wave Surf Breaks in the world and the location for one of surfings most prestigious events outside of the ASP World Tour.
So for Australia’s best junior surfers to compete here is a dream come true and with possibly the best field of under 18 surfers ever assembled due to compete expect to see some amazing surfing throughout the entire week.”
Margaret River offers surfers nearly everything, with super consistency, long rides and hollow sections all blended into the famous power delivered on the south western corner of Australia which is one of surfing’s classic regions. It’s a week of surfing that will showcase an important section of the future of Australian and World surfing with new individual champions crowned along with the Australian Schools Champions in multiple divisions.
