Day 1 of PXM International Vans Pro Starts in Classic Puerto Escondido Conditions
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2008 : - - Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca -- The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star PXM International Vans Pro kicked off today in classic six foot (2 metre) offshore conditions at Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico. Today’s action hosted Round 1 and the first four heats of Round 2.
The ASP WQS acts a gateway for all surfers vying for a spot on the coveted ASP World Tour, with 15 of the top ASP WQS competitors qualifying for the ASP Dream Tour at Year’s end.
Opening day of the PXM International Vans Pro saw former ASP World Tour surfer and longtime ASP WQS campaigner Dean Randazzo (Atlantic City, NJ), 39, advance through his opening heat behind big wave standout Rusty Long (San Clemente, CA), 27, in thumping Mexican Pipeline conditions.
“It was great out there,” Randazzo said. “It’s solid six feet, with 10-12 ft faces. A little closed-out, but some barrels are available if you find them.”
Randazzo, who has been battling serious illness over the past several years, was back in a jersey for the first time since his recovery and was a standout competitor in today’s barrel fest. The tough New Jersey surfer will continue his quest tomorrow at the notorious beachbreak in potentially improved conditions.
“It’s great to be back,” Randazzo said. “I’m so stoked! It felt good to see the inside of a tube while standing up. I got a little winded, but it’s always good to get a good beating.” Christian Carzo (MEX) was also a standout in today’s competition earning both the highest single wave score of an 8.00 out of 10 as well as the day’s highest heat total of 12.33 out of a possible 20 point score. Carzo will surf again tomorrow.
David Rutherford (Puerto Escondido, MEX), 25, who is a Puerto Escondido local and longtime competitor at his home break, is calling for an improved swell angle for tomorrow’s action where he will hit the water in Round 2. “I think we will see the same size tomorrow, with a little better direction,” Rutherford said. “Then dropping in size by the weekend, but organizing itself for better quality. I think on the weekend we will see some A-frames.”
The PXM International Vans Pro will pick back up tomorrow with Heat 5 of Round 2. To see how tomorrow’s PXM International Vans Pro action pans out check back in with the ASP for a daily update on aspworldtour.com or aspnorthamericaorg
