Rudy Palmboom Jnr advances to Round 3 of Reef Hawaiian Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 November, 2008 : - - South Africa’s Rudy Palmboom Jnr took full advantage of the clean one to two metre waves at Haleiwa’s Alií Beach Park in Hawaii on Friday, winning his Round 2 heat to advance to the last 96 in the 6-Star Prime rated, R1.35 million Reef Hawaiian Pro.
The 20 year-old from Durban’s Bluff successfully negotiated his way through one of the few tube rides on Day 2 of the event to earn a near-perfect 9.50 points out of a possible 10, the fifth highest single ride score of the event to date.
Palmboom progressed along with second placed Kevin Sullivan (HAW) with Durban’s Antonio Bortoletto and Andre Silva (BRA) eliminated from the penultimate event on the 2008 ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) when they finished third and fourth respectively. Palmboom, in his rookie year on the WQS, was ranked No 113 going into the event and has already improved on his lowest counting score by reaching Round 3.
Compatriots Dave Richards and Damien Fahrenfort, both from Kommetjie, joined Bortoletto on the sidelines while ASP World Tour campaigner Jordy Smith (Durban) is seeded directly into Round 3. Greg Emslie (East London) and David Weare (Durban), currently ranked Nos. 8 and 9 on the WQS, start in Round 4 (the Round of 64).
See full media release on the action from Day 2 below. Organisers expect to resume at 8 a.m. Saturday morning (8pm Saturday SA time) with the first rounds of the women's Reef Hawaiian Pro, the final event of the 2008 ASP Women’s WQS.
South Africa’s Nikita Robb (East London) and Tammy-Lee Smith (Chaka’s Rock, KZN) have been seeded together into Heat 3 of the Round of 44 where the top three of the six in the encounter will advance to the Round of 32. Rosanne Hodge (East London), ranked No. 4 on the women’s WQS, is seeded directly into the Round 32 where a good result will virtually assure her of a third consecutive year on the elite ASP Women’s World in 2009.
