Hot Surfing and Blistering Weather for Volcom Baboonfish Cape Town

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 November, 2008 : - - A weekend that delivered excellent surf and fine weather in Cape Town saw local surfer Craig Johnson claim victory in the third event of the Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour. The earlier rounds saw fun and highly-contestable surf at Misty Cliffs, and Durban surfers Josh Redman and Chris Leppan were tearing through the early heats.

For the final day the contest was moved down the road to a fun peak at Witsands. The mercury rose, the surfing got hotter, and the finals were a combination of radical surfing and relentless sun. Local surfers shone through in every division, with every final dominated by Cape Town surfers.

The Grom division saw an on-form Jarred Veldhuis show fellow Kommetjie surfer Max Armstrong how it's done by scooping first place, with Armstrong in second. Leon Du Preez was in third place, while Diran Zacharian was fourth.

Tarryn Chudleigh kept the Cape flag flying high by winning the Women's division, outpointing Melkbosstrand surfer Stacey Guy. Holly Armstrong from Kommetjie was in third and Bluff surfer Heidi Palmboom came in fourth.

Always a hot-bed of up-and-coming talent, the Junior Division saw some of the hottest surfing of the day, with these surfers competing intensely for the title. Local ripper Brendon Gibbens fought a fierce battle against Nicky Godfrey from St Francis in the final, with Gibbens getting the nod against Godfrey. Kommetjie surfer Mikey February came in third place, with JC Susan trailing in at fourth.

Craig Johnson blasted all the way to the final of the Open Division, showing just how much local knowledge counts in these tightly-fought events, beating fellow local Brendon Gibbens in the final. Gibbens was having a field day, having already won the Junior division. He went on to win the speciality prize as well, rounding off a great day for the local lad. Third place in the Open Division was Mikhail Thompson, and in fourth was the South Coast ripper Andrew Lange

The Electric Volt Thrower Move Of The Day Award of R500 and a pair of unreal Electric Sunglasses went to Brendon Gibbens for an outrageous forehand gouge in the shorebreak during one of his many earlier heats.

That's it for the year. "We are stoked with this year's series, as we scored cooking surf across the country," said Volcom Marketing Manager Swanky Swanepeol, "and we had some fun times during the events in true Volcom style."

The next event will be the VQS finals in Durban in March next year. Volcom supplied all the free lunches as they do at all of their events, and Red Bull slaked the thirst of the competitors.

The Totally Crustaceous Tour is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, and surfers can enter via their website portal surfingsouthafrica.co.za. The event is co-sponsored by Electric Visuals, Red Bull, EA Games, Eastpak and Future Fins.
