Jordy Smith top scores - Palmboom & Hodge advance at Reef Hawaiian Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 November, 2008 : - - Haleiwa, Oahu -- Jordy Smith took to the skies as his trademark aerial manoeuvres earned the 20 year-old Durbanite the highest individual ride and heat scores on Day 3 of the R1.35 million men’s Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa in Hawaii on Saturday.

Starting his campaign in Round 3 of the 6-Star Prime rated penultimate event on the 2008 ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), Smith shredded the one to 1.5 metre waves on offer, opening his account with an excellent 8.50 point ride and then adding a near perfect 9.50 pointer for a high-flying aerial to post the day’s high score of 18.0 out of 20.

"It was classic Haleiwa today," said Jordy after his heat. "I definitely like big waves and I love coming over here. I love the vibe. It's pretty much where a guy goes from a boy and becomes a man, and I'm in the transformation of that now."  "Getting a wave like that pretty much takes the pressure off. I was just lucky to find that wave early on in the heat," commented Jordy on his 9.5 point ride.

Smith was joined in Round 4 by WQS rookie Rudy Palmboom Jnr (Bluff) who racked up scores of 6.50 and 7.17 to grab second place behind Adam Melling (AUS) and progress to the last 64 in his first contest in Hawaii. South Africa’s Greg Emslie (East London) and David Weare (Durban), ranked Nos. 8 and 9 respectively on the WQS, are seeded directly into Round 4 and get their campaigns underway when the contest resumes.

The wildcard trials and opening two rounds of the women’s Reef Hawaiian Pro were also completed on Saturday with WQS No. 4 Rosanne Hodge (East London) virtually assuring herself of another year on the elite ASP Women’s World Tour in 2009 by advancing to the last 16.

Hodge earned 10.46 points to finish second to Hawaiian prodigy and wildcard trials winner Carissa Moore as the pair eliminated European champion Lee Ann Curren (FRA) and ASP World Tour veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA).

Earlier in the day SA’s Nikita Robb (East London) struggled to find the high scoring waves and was ousted from the event in her opening encounter. Tammy-Lee Smith (Chaka’s Rock, KZN) placed third in the same six-person heat to move on to Round 2 but was eliminated there by WQS No. 1 Sally Fitzgibbons and fellow Australian and former 7 x ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley.
