Coolum Teams Challenge To Commence On Sunshine Coast This Weekend!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 November, 2008 : - - The inaugural Coolum Teams Challenge is set to take off at Coolum Beach this weekend (22nd 23rd November) with twelve of the country’s top boardriding clubs set to do battle in the fierce but friendly interclub competition. Clubs from Northern NSW to Noosa Heads will compete across two days in a six man (1 Junior, 4 Opens and 1 Senior) team-style format.

Adding to the tournament’s already high stakes will be an innovative new finals format. The top eight teams from Saturday’s action will move on to a sudden death team vs. team-style man-on-man heat format to determine the top club over the event. The top three Gold Coast clubs will be competing with Snapper Rocks Surfriders, Kirra Surfriders and the Alley Boardriders all out to capture the title ahead of the six local Sunshine Coast clubs.

Home town favourites Coolum Boardriders will be banking on their local knowledge to help give them the edge ahead of recent Straddie Assault winners Mudjimba Boardriders, while the Noosa and North Shore teams should be worthy final contenders come Sunday. The other two clubs from the Sunshine Coast competing are Wind ’n Sea from Caloundra, and their neighbours Kawana Boardriders.

Coolum Boardriders are host of the event and club president Chris Barraclough says the event will now give the Sunshine Coast its own Teams Challenge to coincide with the long running Kirra Teams Challenge (Gold Coast) and the Straddie Assault (North Stradbroke Island).

“It will be great having it in our backyard and with the likes of 2007 Qld Champ Trevor Tripcony and young up and comer Eli Criaco, the local talent will get a chance to shine on their home waves,” he said. Sponsorship support from Bunnings Warehouses, Ricon, the Sol Bar, Revolution Screen Prints and On Surfari Photography has ensured the event will take off in a big way with $3,000 in prize money up for grabs.

This year’s event will also be the final round of the Queensland Club Surfing Series (QCSS) to determine the numero uno club in Queensland with Sunshine Coast club North Shore Boardriders (1720 pts) in prime position to take out the prestigious title after being the bridesmaid in both the Straddie Assault and the Kirra Teams Challenge.

Kirra Boardriders are hot on their heals on 1556pts, while dark horses Mudjimba Boardriders (1462pts) will be on a high after claiming the Straddie Assault title last month. Sitting right behind the pack in fourth are Snapper Rocks (1460pts), who are considered hot favourites for any event that they enter.

Action kicks off at 8.am both days with the heat draw to be held at the Sol Bar Coolum Beach on Friday night and presentations to be held at the Sol Bar on Sunday afternoon.
