MySurfWorld.com talk to Laurie Towner about his Hawaii preparation
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 November, 2008 : - - My Surf World chats with Laurie Towner on all things Hawaii at the moment....
So Laurie, you’re in Hawaii at the moment, you must be stoked to be back over there?
Yeah really stoked, I was getting so amped whenI was at home to get over here this year. I was way more pumped to getover there this year than any other year I think. When I was home I got a whole heap of new guns and I have just been hanging to ridethem. So you would have been training pretty hard for this season I’m guessing so you can go mad?Yeah I did a fair bit of trainingeveryday for about 3 weeks before I came over here. I was mixing my training up a fair bit. Every day I would do something different.
So give us a little bit of a rundown of what you would do?
Well about 3 times a week I would go to our local heated pool and do laps. This usually consisted of allot of sprint work and interval training. Thesprint work was to help me paddle at maximum speed when I really need to. I would also do some beach training 3 times a week. I would runback beach which has a massive sand dune at the end of it and I would do sprints up that. That gave me a fair flogging most times, startedto get good at it in the end thou. Would also get on my mountain bike and ride into town to check out the surf and see what some of my mateswere up to.
So you seemed pretty busy, you get time to go surfing?
Yeah I was surfing once or twice a day with mates. I would get my boat out as often as I could when the conditions allowed it. The week before Icame over we were getting some really fun waves out point. It was onshore but super fun and not crowded. The last week of being home just got me so keen to get over here, mainly because I was surfingonshore waves only good for turns and I was just super keen to get some massive barrels.
So your keen to go crazy once again, you have a pretty good rep over Hawaii and in the big stuff. Do you feel like you have added pressure and high expectations from others?
None of thathype and shit bothers me hey. I enjoy trying to pull into the biggest barrels I can get my hands on. In Hawaii if a big pit comes your wayyou just have to go cause it doesn’t happen very often over there, well without anyone being on the inside of you anyway. And when I get a good one I just want to get another one which is bigger andbetter.
Well that’s about it from us. Thanks for taking time to speak to us.
No worries Matt. I’ll see you when I get home. Oh and sweet website.
