    VQS
    South Jetty, Oceanside California
    15 - 16 November 2008

Volcom Stone's Blowfish scores clean Oceanside Jetty

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 November, 2008 : - -  The second stop of the Blowfish Surf Series went off with some insane conditions and incredible waves. With 3-5 foot peaky, clean conditions and 150 competitors we had a full day ahead of us. On top of the great waves the kids were going nuts all day, psyching for any breach antics that took place. It was an absolutely insane event with crazy waves, kids and weather. Heres how it all went down.

The Juniors went crazy all day and amazingly, stepped it up even further in the water, blowing tail, getting barreled and tearing the defenseless waves to pieces. These kids make even the pros want to quit with the levels theyre at already. In the final, Chase Wilson jumped to an early lead with a 5, but this just got Jared Cassidy and Nick Fowler psyched who both snagged some pretty solid scores.

Olin Bower came through later on with some solid scores along with Max Gardenier and JD McFadden, but in the end Chase came through with some huge scores. For his shredding, Chase walked away with the win, a Riviera complete skateboard and enough prizes to make Bill Gates jealous. The Girls Division was nuts this event, with girls coming from all over California for their chance to surf some super fun Oceanside.

Not only were the girls ripping in the water, but they were going crazy on the beach as well. Once in the water, it was all business with each girl battling it out for points to qualify for the VQS World Champs. Erika Cook looked like the girl to beat, kicking the heat off with a solid score. Jenna Balester quickly answered back with a flurry of good waves.

This got Sara Taylor fired up who grabbed two set waves, putting her in position to win. As the heat wound down it looked like it was going to be Sara taking the win, but just before the final buzzer, Jenna grabbed a set wave which she destroyed into oblivion. For her last minute heroics, Jenna walked away with the win, a Riviera skateboard, Skull Candy head phones and so many prizes she could barely fit them in her car for the drive home.

Chelsea Rauhut, Darlene Conolly, and Alissa Lentz brought up the back half of the final. The Groms were in true form, staying in their suits all day, with enough shaving cream and baby powder caked on to make it look like abdominal snowmen were taking over the beach. Once in the water, it was all business as the kids battled it out for the first place prize of an electric guitar.

Matt Passaquindicci looked like a favorite throughout the day and continued his run into the final kicking things off with a solid wave. Kent Nishiya quickly answered back grabbing an equally good wave. As the final wound down Kent managed to find the right waves and got the slight edge over Matt for the win.

For his efforts, Kent walked away with an insane electric guitar, Vestal vatch, and more prizes then he knew what to do with. Hunter Johnson, and Kyle Merrick rounded out the rest of the final.

The Pro-Am division in San Diego is always stacked with top notch competitors and Oceanside didn't disappoint with 60 guys battling it out for $500 in cash. Russel Fawley and Ryan Burch both jumped into the leading spots with some set waves that linked all the way to the beach. For most of the heat, Russel and Ryan looked like the surfers to watch, until Shane Valiere began to blow up out of nowhere.

Suddenly Shane was a major contender and sealed the deal with a massive backside air that he somehow managed to hang on to, grabbing himself $50 for the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day as well as the win. Shane walked away with $550 dollars total cash, a Riviera complete, a Santa Cruz skate deck, and enough prizes to fill an Olympic swimming pool. Josh Buran, Drew Irons, and Justin Quirk filled the rest of the final.
