Volcom Stone Stalefish grabs Tay St, Mt Maunganui NZ

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 November, 2008 : - -  Volcom Stone’s VQS Stalefish surf contest is a one day event which will be held Saturday 13th, Tay St, Mt Maunganui NZ  Registration is at 7am and we will be launching the 14 & Under Groms division at 7:30am. Spots in all divisions are limited and filled on a first come first serve basis.

There are four divisions; 14 & Under Groms, 15-17 Juniors, Girls and Pro-Am. Sign up on the day only, surfers under 18 need parent’s signature click the link: download entry form to print and bring on the day. Free entry and loads of giveaways all day. Heats will be 10mins best one wave with the most radical manoeuvres atomically rewarded.

We caught up with Luke Cederman on the lead up to the event to see what he has been up to and what he thinks about the up coming  VQS Crustaceous Tour events, heres what he had to say:

I’ve just been surfing heaps and trying to get better every surf, recently I went to Portugal for the ISA World Champs as a representative of New Zealand, which was a great experience although I did terrible in the contest. Came back from Portugal and went straight to Gisborne for the first NZ circuit contest of the year, waves were bad but flapped my way to 3rd place and won the “Sticky Johnson Wax” best air of the contest.

Next year I plan on competing in the NZ circuit, try win that, travel overseas to do a few comps and surf trips and get better at surfboarding.  The mount VQS should be a lot of fun, It’s just coming in to summer so good time of year for it, hopefully there will be some waves at the Tay street reef, I’ve heard that wave is incredible, so maybe we’ll be getting some big barrels in our heats. Ha!

The VQS events are probably the best comps around, they’re competitive but the vibe at every comp is so relaxed and everyone’s just there to have a bit of fun and they’re free which is pretty cool. It’s a good day, you get to see some really good surfing and see people do some random things to win prizes.

Really looking forward to the VQS championships at my home break Manu May Raglan in April, all my friends have won it and have been to the world champs in Newport, so pretty keen on doing that myself. The championships are definitely a lot more competitive and less laid back than the qualifiers because every competitor knows what’s at stake, you win the comp you go to America, not a bad prize and all for free!!

Finalists will qualify for the Australian VQS Championships at Manu Bay Raglan on the 18th April 2009 where there will be 4 champs crowned with the Junior & Pro-Am winners will be flown to the Newport Beach, California to represent New Zealand and battle it out for over US$100,000.00 cash purse at the Totally Crustaceous VQS World Champs!
