Tow-In News

After seven years of discussion, PWCs allowed at Mavs, banned at Ghost Trees

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 November, 2008 : - - Monterey, Ca -- Federal officials are allowing tow-in watercraft at Mavericks when waves kick up at the popular Monterey County surf spot. The revised rules come after seven years of discussion over allowing thrill-seeking surfers to be towed into waves by Waverunners, Jet Skis and other personal watercraft.

While they are being allowed at Mavericks on big-wave days, they are still banned at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Ghost Trees off Pebble Beach and the Moss Landing jetty in Monterey Bay.

Tow-in surfing allows surfers to be towed into waves and slung into position at 30 mph or more. The Monterey Bay sanctuary had banned the watercraft since 1992 to avoid disturbing sea otters, seabirds and other wildlife.
