Kelly Slater retruning to defend his Snapper Rocks title

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 November, 2008 : - - Nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater has confirmed he will return to the Gold Coast next year to defend his Quiksilver Pro title. It is the strongest indication yet he plans to chase a 10th world crown. While 36-year-old Slater has refused to be drawn on his surfing future, organisers of event have revealed the unstoppable American is already locked in for March 2009.

"The Quiksilver Pro, presented by LG, and the Gold Coast are two things very special to Kelly," said event spokesman Johnathan Jenkins. "He has always claimed the waves of the Gold Coast are among his favourites in the world."

The Quiksilver Pro is the first World Tour event of the year. Slater defeated Coolangatta golden boy Mick Fanning to win the Gold Coast tournament earlier this season. At the time Slater said that he was undecided if he would complete the 2008 tour, before eventually going on to destroy his rivals and wrap up the title with two events left.

"His non-committal reputation is pretty legendary among the surfing community," said Jenkins. "But his competitiveness always seems to get the better of him. If I was a betting man I would be putting my money on him going for 10 titles." The Quiksilver and season-opening Women's World Tour event, the Roxy Pro, are confirmed for '09 on the Gold Coast from February 28 to March 11.
