Lee-Ann Curren Makes the Semis at Sunset Beach, Pulls Out from ASP World Junior Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 December, 2008 : - - Capbreton - - Lee-Ann Curren (Anglet, FRA), 19, a former ASP European Women's Champion, reached the Semifinals of the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, wrapping up the year with an equal 7th place in the second to last ASP Women's World Tour event that saw Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) clinch her second consecutive ASP Women's World title.
Curren, who won the trials to get a wildcard into the ASP Women's World Tour event, opened her run in the Roxy Pro with an impressive Round 1 heat win over 7X ASP Women's World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS) before besting both Rebecca Woods (AUS) and Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) in the Quarterfinals. Curren was eventually stopped one heat before the final, earning an equal 7th place.
Curren, daughter of 3X ASP World Champion Tom Curren (USA), ends up her first year as a fulltime ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) competitor ranked No. 21 and will focus 100% in 2009 to try and qualify for the ASP Women's World Tour.
At 19 years old, the French surfer from the Basque Country has already made the Semifinals of an ASP Women's World Tour event twice this year and rises as one of the most promissing European surfers towards a Dream Tour inception.
Curren, who got a ticket for the ASP World Junior Championships (WJC) at Narabeen thanks to a second place finish on the 2008 ASP European Women's Junior race, announced recently she was pulling out of the prestigious event.
"I need to rest and regroup before starting 2009," Curren said. "It has been a long year with lots of travelling and events and I need to have a long enough break to make sure I am ready to start 2009 in very good form."
Pauline Ado (FRA), a former ISA World Junior champion and 2X ASP European Women's Junior champion, is next in line to receive the invitation for the event taking place at Narabeen in Australia next January and will represent Europe with 2008 European champion Alizee Arnaud (FRA).
