Al Hunt on Sunset's field of World Tour broken dreams
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 December, 2008 : - - Coolangatta -- Well, it’s the final countdown. The last event of the season, the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime O’Neill World Cup of surfing saw massive surf over the weekend, with wave heights in the twelve-to-fifteen foot range blasting through Sunset Bowl and dashing the hopes of several outside the bubble.
Yesterday’s action saw the broken dreams of 14 surfers outside of the qualification zone: Brett Simpson (USA), Jadson Andre (BRA), Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), Raoni Monteiro (BRA), Pedro Henrique (BRA), Heitor Alves (BRA), Shaun Cansdell (AUS), Pablo Paulino (BRA), Nathan Yeomans (USA), Leonardo Neves (BRA), Leigh Sedley (AUS), Adam Melling (AUS), Adam Robertson (AUS), Austin Ware (USA) and Jay Thompson (AUS).
Those surviving the solid Sunset screamers (or yet to surf) but still needing result to crack the qualification barrier were Patrick Gudauskas (USA), Phillip MacDonald (AUS), Hizunome Betterro (BRA), Simao Romao (BRA), Yadin Nicol (AUS), Sunny Garcia (HAW), Dion Atkinson (AUS), Dan Ross (AUS) and Shaun Gossmann (AUS). While some of them are long shots, they all still have a mathematical possibility of cracking the current cutoff.
The girls are still out to lunch until the double-qualifiers are decided following the completion of Sunset and Maui, but it looks like there could be as many as four double-qualifiers at present. The risk will be if Jacqueline Silva (BRA) can maintain her current position at No. 9 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, then Alana Blanchard (HAW) is in. However, if she falls outside of the Top 10 on the Dream Tour, she’ll need to utilize her ASP WQS rating and Blanchard will be out.
This coming week sees more large surf projected for the culmination of the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime O’Neill World Cup of Surfing so expect a dramatic ending to this year’s qualification race.
Until then. Aloha, Al Hunt
