Rip Curl South Africa salutes Stephanie Gilmore – 2008 ASP Women’s World Champion!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 December, 2008 : - - Rip Curl South Africa salutes international team rider Stephanie Gilmore who claimed her second successive ASP Women’s World Surfing Title in Hawaii on Monday when she won the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, the penultimate event on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour.

“Congratulations to Stephanie for making it two World Titles in a row,” said Stuart Daykin, CEO of Rip Curl SA. “She made history by winning the crown as rookie last year and now she’s made it two for two....Rip Curl South Africa joins the rest of the world in celebrating Stephanie’s achievement and we’re proud to be part of the global Rip Curl brand.”

Gilmore started the defense of her World Title with a 9th place finish in the 2008 season opening event in Queensland before rocketing back to the top of the rankings by winning the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach and the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle in France in August.

The 20-year-old retained her lead after placing 3rd in Rio de Janeiro but fell to second place after finishing 9th in the Tour’s biggest event in Sydney, Australia in October. A gutsy win in Peru saw Gilmore back at the top and the victory in Hawaii on Monday saw her lift the 2008 trophy with one event to spare.

“I had no idea this was going to happen today when I woke up this morning,” Gilmore said. “Sofia (Mulanovich) went down and then Layne (Beachley) went down and I found myself in the Final with a chance to clinch it. It feels unbelievable....The second one definitely feels better than the first one,” Gilmore said. “I’m going to savor this one for a while and then readjust my goals for next year. There should be big celebrations on for tonight.”

Gilmore’s four victories this year have already equaled the four she recorded on her way to clinching her first world title in 2007. She still has the opportunity to add another event win in the season ending event at Honolua Bay on Maui starting December 8, an event she won last year.
