Fun Surf For Opening Day Of The Roxy Wahine Cup

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 December, 2008 : - - Suncoast Beach, Durban -- In fun two to three-foot waves, the surfers in the 10th annual Roxy Wahine Cup took to the water this morning for the start of South Africa’s premier stand-alone surfing event. The best female surfers in the country are all entered and are determined to win their divisions and secure some of the generous prize money. There is also a one-year Roxy Sponsorship up for grabs for the winner of the Novice Division.

The first heat to hit the water was heat one of the open women’s division and it consisted of Tasha Mentasti (Dbn), Lisa Mace (Kommetjie), Morag Steele (Somerset West) and Lauren Colby (KZN). Morag Steel had the honours of catching the first ride of the event, while Lisa Mace won the first heat of the day.

Heat two saw Nikita Robb (EL) advance through with Faye Zoetmulder (PE). In heat three it was Tamarys De Maroussem (Westbrook) and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) advancing, and the final heat of the round saw Laurie McGregor and Alice McGregor, both from East London, get the one and two spots to advance.

With the weather and swell predictions looking good for the rest of the weekend, competitors and spectators alike are in for some fun times. There is going to be live music on Saturday from the likes of Stealing Love Jones, Shannon Hope and Roly Struckmeyer, as well as weekend-long graffiti art on masonite from local graffiti artist Sean.

Tomorrow sees day two of the event start at 9 am, and will coincide with the 9 am kickoff of the Roxy Learn To Surf Tour at Suncoast beach. There will be three daily sessions of two hours each on both Saturday and Sunday.

This year is the 10th annual running of the event, and shows Roxy’s dedicated support of South African women’s surfing. The event has a tradition of being one of the most well-attended events on the calendar, and the competitors have always claimed it is their favourite event of the year.

The Roxy Wahine Cup is a Surfing South Africa (SSA) event and forms part of the Pro Surf Tour. SSA is the governing body for the sport in South Africa. The event is set to receive extensive coverage on Boardriders TV, the boardsports TV program that has become a firm fixture amongst South African viewers.

The event is sponsored by Virgin Mobile and Resolution, and is supported by MXit, Supersport, Suncoast, Durban City, Clean & Clear, Nivea and Red Bull.
