Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 December, 2008 : - - Gold Coast -In the wake of yet another successful National Junior Surf Titles, Australia is set to continue its domination of the surfing world with eyewear giant Arnette securing sponsorship of the country’s premier amateur junior events.
The new sponsorship includes the state titles in Queensland and New South Wales and is complimented by the annual Australian Junior Surfing titles. The commitment will extend to at least 2010 with Arnette expected to continue supporting Australia’s U/18 surfing stocks in the future. “We are extremely excited to have Arnette on board to support junior surfing,” said CEO of Surfing Queensland, Andrew Stark.
“This is the best of the best of junior surfing Australia wide and to have such a strong international brand as Arnette behind the events is a big bonus for the sport’s development.” Surfing Australia Chairman Norm Innis agrees with Stark saying, “Arnette’s sponsorship of the National, Queensland, and NSW junior surfing titles is an investment directly into Australia’s surfing future.”
“Arnette’s support of young surfers by providing events of this caliber is crucial to keeping Australian surfing at the peak of world performance.” Each year almost 350 teenagers across Queensland and New South Wales enter the state titles in U/18 and U/16 age divisions with contestants vying for all-important state title crowns and a spot in their respective state teams to contest the Australian Junior Surfing titles.
A win at state or national level is regarded as a major step in a surfer’s competitive career with the list of past winners featuring some of the greatest names in world surfing including, 2007 world surfing champion Mick Fanning and ASP World Tour ranked surfers Joel Parkinson, Dean Morrison and Bede Durbidge, plus former world champions Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damien Hardman.
Current women’s world no.1 Stephanie Gilmore, former world champion Chelsea Hedges and reigning world junior champion Sally Fitzgibbons are all included on the prestigious honour roll. The talented Fitzgibbons is the latest success story coming out of the state and national qualification structure, using her multiple NSW and Australian title triumphs as a springboard onto the world arena.
Arnette’s Marketing Manager Andrew Turner says they’re pleased to be associated with Australia’s budding surf stars. “It’s the dream of many young surfers to win a state or national title so Arnette are extremely excited about having the opportunity to sponsor surfing at this significant junior level.”
