BSA Surfer Of The Year awards

Stefan Corbin crowned Open Men's Surfer Of The Year, Chelsea Roett, takes the Open Ladies.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 December, 2008 : - - THE Barbados Surfing Association (BSA) saluted the crem้ de la creme of the fraternity when the association held its Surfer Of The Year awards at Surfers Bay, Christ Church, on December 13. Taking the top awards were Stefan Corbin, who was crowned as Open Men's Surfer Of The Year, and Chelsea Roett, who took the trophy for Open Ladies.

Roett was also adjudged Under-18 Girls' Surfer Of The Year, while Jordan Heaselgrave took the top award in both the Under-16 Boys' and Under-18 Boys' categories. Jay Garrett was awarded the trophy for Surfer Of The Year in the Long Board division, while Wayne Roett is the top masters surfer. Daniel Edghill and Dane Mackie were the top Under-12 and Menehune surfers, respectively.

A good year

Looking back on the year, Jason Kistoo, BSA vice-president, who also doubled as master of ceremonies for the night, praised the team which participated in the International Surfing Association's World Junior Surfing Championships in France earlier this year.

He singled out Bruce Mackie, Chelsea Roett, Chelsea Tuach, Alyssa Fernandes and Lewis St John for their incredible performances, which helped push the team to its 14th place world ranking. "That was a big accomplishment for Barbados.

But outside of [Mackie and St John], it is definitely country pride when I see those two girls (Chelsea Tuach and Chelsea Roett) surf, and I hope that they continue doing it because they will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming junior world championships which will be held in Ecuador," Kistoo said.

"Hopefully, we will be able to continue our performance next year and hopefully crack the top ten," he said. Kistoo also thanked corporate sponsors, including Lazy Days, NKM, Sprite, and Banks, for throwing their support behind the events throughout the year.

The final placings are:

Under-12 Boys – Daniel Edghill, Gavin Fernandes, Dane Mackie, Che Allan.
Menehune – Dane Mackie, Andrew Rose, Zander Venezia, Isabella Venezia.
Long Board – Jay Garrett, Wayne Roett, Kenny Tuach, Alan Burke.
