    North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii
    5 - 15 January 2009

Backdoor Shootout will celebrate in park Sunday

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 January, 2009 : - - Butch Helemano will emcee the opening ceremony for the seventh annual Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, at 10 a.m. Sunday at Ehukai Beach Park. The Shootout's holding period is Jan. 5-15 and the contest will be held at Backdoor Pipeline off Ehukai Beach Park, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on surfing days.

The teams entered this year are Da Hui, Quiksilver, Oakley, Hurley, Red Bull, Billabong, Volcom and North Shore Boys. Among the surfers competing are Makua Rothman, Pancho Sullivan, Mark Healey, Danny Fuller, Kala Alexander, Keali'i Mamala and 2008 winner Jaime O'Brien. The holding period for this one-of-a-kind event kicks off next Monday January 5, 2009 at Ehukai Beach Park.

Last year Jamie O'Brien was the winner, the previous event to that ran in 2004 with Pancho Sullivan winning.

This contest boasts the most participation of Hawai’i born surfers and with it’s unique ‘no-elimination’ judging format which involves three rounds of non-elimination, four man heats and only your best three waves scored – it’s any surfer’s game. So expect to see the best waveriders in the world competing for a shot at the Shootout title!
