Ice Cube Surf Classic goes off at Whitsand Bay, Cornwall
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 January, 2009 : - - The 1st Surf competition of the year took place on the South East Coast of Cornwall at Whitsand Bay on Sunday 4th January. The Ice Cube Surf Classic, lived up to its name as it was held in very cold but crisp conditions with some great 2-3ft offshore Surf.
The competition was organised by the newly formed South East Cornwall Surf Club, in partnership with Christian Surfers UK who assisted in running the event.
The South coast was pumping in the run up to the competition; the three days prior saw 3-5ft chilly offshore gems hitting the banks of Whitsand. Saturday 3rd Jan in the morning saw a foot and a half of swell so with the swell due to increase significantly on Sunday with a 14 second period, the call was made to postpone the event until the Sunday.
After a great night at The Finnygook Inn for the Clubs fund raiser, on Sunday morning the call was made to go to Main beach Whitsand as the venue. A fairly consistent 2ft offshore, the challenge.

A different format was used this year which allowed each surfer from every team 30 minutes in the water, this was possible by having 30minute 7 person heats which counted towards the team score.
Last years winners, Team Liskeard and in particular the golden boy Will Doyle were a massive disappointment, age or alcohol to blame they underperformed!
The new kids decided this was their opportunity, standouts were the Smith boys, older brother Jack showing that 6 weeks in Hawaii puts you in the mood; carving on choice right handers.
Bruce was intent on landing an air 360 on every wave that came his way, Tom Mac got some lengthy rides, styling to the sand; young Jake Marshall ripped beyond his years helping Tregonhawke Kooks to take the overall team honours.
In the individual event the under 12`s final saw a reversal of last years first and second, with Ed Smith piping Jo Bracegirdle to the post; they both genuinely rip and showed the seniors where its at.
Hats off to 10 year old Trystan Hopgood who air dropped the biggest wave of the day. Special mention for 6 year old Finn McSherry who dry haired managed his wave count in 4minutes flat whilst wearing a 3mm suit in arctic conditions – nutter!
In the U16 event final Gabi Roe beat all the rest of the finalists to take the victory, to add to her top female award, well done Gabi.
The whole event had a great Community atmosphere, helped by the team format, the BBQ, Tea and Coffee and beach fire. So after the initial disappointment The ‘Ice Cube’ produced another great day out at the end of the festive period, thanks to all the Committee, Sponsors and Christian Surfers UK.
