ASP Africa contingent slip to No. 6 in regional standings

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 January, 2009 : - - Kai Barger (HAW), 19, and Pauline Ado (FRA), 17, have been crowned the 2008 ASP World Junior Champions after winning the men and women’s events respectively in the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships at North Narrabeen beach in Sydney Australia.

The ASP Africa contingent in the event produced mediocre results and slipped to No. 6 out of the seven ASP Regions with Rudy Palmboom Jr. (Bluff) providing the only highlight when he posted the second highest heat total of Round 2.

All five South Africans in the 48-man men’s field were relegated to cutthroat man-on-man Round 2 heats where Casey Grant (Scottburgh) and event debutant Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) were eliminated from the event. Palmboom, ASP Africa champion Klee Strachan (Winkelspruit) and first-timer Nick Godfrey (Cape St Francis) recorded heat wins there but were ousted in Round 3.

Super-talented Nikita Robb (East London), who finished 3rd overall in this event back in 2005, and rising star Sarah Baum (Athlone Park), 14, placed equal 9th in the 18 strong women’s field.

Both Barger and Ado will be honoured at this year’s ASP Banquet in February alongside the likes of nine-time ASP World Tour Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 36, and two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, amongst others.
