An interview with winner James Hendy
So you've won the prestigious 'Substance Shootout' which means you got the tube of the film (and there's a lot of good competition for that title). Can you tell us a little bit about that wave?
Yeah, well stoked to have won the shootout title! Really surprised, as there was so many good waves and surfers in the running. The wave just looked like another big grinding close-out but there was a little kink in it so I just pulled in for a laugh and hoped for the best - saw a little gap and decided I should try to get out before it clobbered me!
Tell us about that day (obviously not where it is!!!)
Well, we saw the chart and it looked like it was going to be maaaahoooosive so I jumped in with Steve England and Nick Jones from Aggy. We drove up in the afternoon and arrived late in the dark at the spot so had no idea of how big it was. My auntie lives just round the corner so we crashed at hers.
When we woke up you could see the big clean lines from where she lives, we thought it looked massive. Arriving at the spot in the morning confirmed it was pretty big, but still a big too high and warbly.
When we paddled out there was only Mickey Smith and the loooooon body board contingent out there, they were just taking off on anything... Some really good size chunks coming through.
I remember watching Danny Wall taking off on a behemoth of a wave when I was paddling out - such a big wide tube on it as he came off the bottom I was looking down on him squeaking his bottom turn, it seemed a long way down!
Really got the heart pounding! I got nailed on the first few, then the tide dropped and it cleaned- up and everyone settled in. There were some nice ones but not many waves stayed open all the way down the line - there were lots of close-out's too, so I was stoked to make that one.
It looks pretty big. How would you describe that wave?
I hate calling sizes as someone always calls you a woofter claiming it was bigger than it really was..! But I reckon it was a solid 6 -8 ft. In the morning there was definitely some bigger ones too. As an indicator Jessie Davies was riding something like a 7'10" and he was the most comfortable out there for sure - getting the best waves. It was a tad sketchy on my 6'5"!!
Oli and I were on the reef watching and never thought you'd make it but you just snuck out! Did you know you were going to make it all the way?
No.. It didn’t look that makeable when I pulled in, luckily it stayed open then I saw the little doggy door exit.
Is tube riding your favourite part of surfing?
It’s about all I can still do.... so yes!
What do you think of the idea of having this interactive competition on a surf DVD?
I think it’s a great idea! Anything that encourages people to go and buy, or just watch a copy of a local made film, show some support for the boys and get a bit of banter going is healthy! Great laugh too. I think my landslide victory might have had something to do with my mates at Beach Beat surfboards and Aggy Surf shop getting on the programme with the voting (thanks Toby!) But I do think it’s a great way to encourage people to watch the movie and show there support for the boys...
