Ace Cool wraps up the latest news from the North Shore

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 January, 2009 : - - Howzit North Shore! Lots of rain, dirty water and relatively small surf over the Christmas Holidays and so far during the New Year of 2009. Hopefully things will improve during the second half of January and we will have some nice weather and booming surf later on this year.

"The 1st half of Jan/09 looks like junk with windy east winds from a rare January high pressure that is blocking any winter swells. Not until this high pressure leaves us…maybe in the middle of the month… will those big winter storms be allowed to develop from Japan or Alaska to give us those long fetch swells from 18 to 20 second intervals with maybe 18 foot swells from the WNW direction. Maybe the 3rd or 4th week of January is where we will see a train of swells into the 1st half of February of maybe up to 20 foot plus IF we’re lucky." (Ron Barron quote)

The 2008 Triple Crown of Surfing was quite a show to finish out the WCT and WQS ASP 2008 World Tours of Surfing in Hawaii this year. Kelly Slater came into the Triple Crown already World Champ for 2008 and he finished it off by winning the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

The Triple Crown Season started out with the Reef Hawaiian Pro Mens and Womens events in Haleiwa.

Michel Bourez of France took down Jihad Khodr of Brazil. Kekoa Bacalso was 3rd and Dusty Payne was 4th both are from Hawaii.

The Womens division was won by 16 year old Carissa Moore of Hawaii. Layne Beachley of Australia took 2nd. Laura Enever of Australia got 3rd and Hawaii’s Coco Ho was 4th.

Then the action moved to Sunset beach with the O’Neill World Cup for the men. 1st went to C.J. Hobgood of the USA. 2nd was Tom Whitaker of Australia. 3rd went to Marcus Hickman of Hawaii and 4th was Jordy Smith of S. Africa.

The Womens Roxy Pro at Sunset was won by Stephanie Gilmore of Australia. 2nd went to Silvana Lima of Brazil. 3rd was Jessi Miley-Dwyer and 4th was Nicola Atherton both of Australia. Joel Parkinson of Australia won the Mens Triple Crown Title for 2008.

Stephanie Gilmore of Australia also won the Billabong Pro on Maui and claimed the Van’s Triple Crown title for the women and $10K. Layne Beachley was 2nd and Melanie Bartels of Hawaii 3rd in the final Triple Crown women’s ratings.
