Nathaniel Curran in the number one spot for seven months
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 January, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- 2009 has started off right where 2008 ended for Nathaniel Curran in the No. 1 spot on the ASP WQS. That’s seven months in No. 1 spot since the US Open ended in July 2008, which for sure is some sort of record.
Nathaniel was able to hold off the East Coast onslaught of Aaron Cormicon, Blake Jones and Cory Lopez to take out the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro presented by Ron Jon this past weekend in Florida. Although the start of the event was delayed due to small surf, the final days were held in great waves.
2009 is actually looking like being a great year for the men’s ’QS considering the current economic crisis. Event numbers are up, but most importantly the bigger ASP WQS events have increased by around 20%. 5-Star events have gone from six to eight, 6-Star from ten to twelve and 6-Star Primes from eight to ten. Hopefully they will all happen, but as we know, this may change.
Unfortunately, the women’s ASP WQS is not enjoying the same growth, and in fact, has lost some events, which ASP are looking to replace. The ASP Pro Junior regional event numbers are similar to 2008 and the longboard regional events are up with the addition of events in Australia and North America.
This week’s ASP WQS heads to Lima, Peru the ASP WQS 2-Star Copa Movistar.
That’s it for this week. Regards, Al Hunt
