Al Hunt on the first Venezuelan to win an ASP WQS event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 January, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- Congratulations to Rafael Pereira for his win in the ASP WQS 2-Star Copa Movistar Pro in Lima, Peru. Rafael is the first surfer from Venezuela to ever win an ASP WQS event. He was able to fend off a serious challenge from local Peruvian Sabastian Alarcon in the man-on-man Final.

Rafael has moved to 50th on the ratings, with the Top 10 unchanged from last week. The next men’s ASP WQS event will be the 5-Star Hang Loose Pro, February 9th at Noronha in Brazil and this is where the serious surfers start their 2009 campaign, and for the women, their first event will be in Lima, Peru this coming weekend.

Meanwhile in Australia, the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series kicked off at Burleigh Heads with the ASP Grade-4 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior in great surf.  Owen Wright was victorious, defeating Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in the man-on-man Final.

This event attracted 148 competitors including 16 of the 48 competitors from the Billabong ASP World Junior Titles. Reigning ASP World Junior Champ Kai Barger posted a 13th, and runner-up Jadson Andre, a 9th. The ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series moves to Stradbroke Island February 3rd for the ASP Grade-5 Oakley Pro Junior.

That’s it for this week. Regards, Al Hunt
