Billabong Pro Junior series sets sights on Coffs Harbour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 February, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- The finest junior surfers on the globe are set to converge on Coffs Harbour next week as the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour prepares to blow-up the Banana Coast.

Featuring an assortment of the hottest junior surfing commodities, the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is sure to be mind-blowing as the best, most radical, progressive junior competitors from around the world get ready to battle it out.

One such competitor looking to light up Coffs Harbour’s beaches will be, the current ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series leader, Owen Wright (Culburra, NSW). Wright who started his 2009 with the best possible start, a win in the first ASP Australasian Pro Junior event of the year, has his sights set on continuing his domination in Coffs Harbour.

“Last weeks win was exactly the start to the season I was after and a goal for this year is to win the Australasian Pro Junior Series so I’m definitely looking for as many early wins in the season as possible – the waves seem to always be good at Coff’s so I’ll definitely  go in confident” said Wright .

However, Wright will not have it all his own way, with a host of supreme international and domestic talent on hand. With the likes of wonder-kid Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti), reigning ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series champion Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW) and Australian under 18 champion Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW) to name but a few, the action will be electric.

Leading the local contingent will be 23rd seed Billy Kean (Sawtell, NSW) who is chomping at the bit to secure a good result on his home turf.

“I felt good at the opening event at Burleigh Heads last week and in my home waters I’m really looking to consolidate a good start to the season. I’ve trained hard all summer and this year is the time for me to step right up and perform on this circuit, I’m looking forward to the event” said Kean today.

Joining Kean will be local lads Justin Turk (Arrawarra, NSW) and Alex Swadling (Diggers Beach, NSW) all looking to stamp their local dominance on the star-studded competiton. As the third stop on the prestigious 2009 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Circuit, the Grade 3 ASP Rated Boys event, and Grade 1 ASP Rated Girls event will see a whopping $23,000 in prize money up for grabs.

The girl’s field will host 18 of the most talented up-and-coming female surfers in the world including the event’s top two seeds, Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) and Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW), in the first event of the season. Not to be outshone in the in the girls division will be fourth seed Angela Keighran (Mullaway, NSW) and 12th seed Kira Townsend (Sawtell, NSW)

The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is a mobile event stretching throughout the Coffs Coast and will be held from the 11-15 February 2009. The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is proudly supported by Sony, Virgin Blue, VonZipper, Kustom, Coopers Surf Australia, ASP Australasia and Surfing NSW.
