Hyundai Malfunction Surf Festival

ASP World Longboard Qualifying Series
New Tweed Coast Qld Australia
21 - 29 March 2009

Registration opens for Australia's Hyundai Malfunction

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 February, 2009 : - - Registration has now opened for Australia’s premier longboard surfing event, the 2009 Hyundai Malfunction and entries are looking to make this year the biggest since its inception in 1984.

For the second year in a row, the Hyundai Malfunction Surf Festival is back on the New Tweed Coast and for the first time in history has been extended from six to nine days. The festival will feature five days of competition which are a feature in the ASP world longboard qualifying series, plus an array of surfing lifestyle events in Kingscliff and Domain Casuarina Beach Resort.

Event organiser, Sean McKeown, says there has been a huge amount of interest in this year’s event following the success of last year and extended schedule of lifestyle events that surround the competition. “We’re urging competitors to get in quickly this year to secure their entry into the competition,” he said.

“Since we have extended the festival, we have been inundated with queries from around the world in regards to entering the event and for safety reasons we have to cap the number of competitors. “We’re expecting over 300 entries this year and a large contingent of spectators who will not only enjoy the competition, but the lifestyle and social events that complement it.

“The New Tweed Coast has perfect surf conditions as well as premium accommodation and world-class restaurants to keep everyone entertained, it’s tipped to be our biggest year yet.” The surf festival is expected to inject in excess of $2 million into the local economy.

Taking place from 21 – 29 March, with surfing commencing on the 25th, the 2009 Hyundai Malfunction will encompass a number of open amateur and aged divisions for traditional surfers, a leg of the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series for Men & Women, a Retro division for boards constructed prior to 1981 and the fast growing craze of Stand Up Paddle Surfing.

In addition, there will also be several events staged out of the water including the Domain Casuarina Beach Resort Art Exhibition, Salt Village Surf Vehicle Rally, a huge variety of surf Bands, the Domain Casuarina Beach Resort Luau Dinner and much, much more.
