Girls open Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour with a bang
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 February, 2009 : - - Diggers Beach, NSW -- The hottest female surfing commodities’ on the globe opened proceedings at Diggers Beach today, as the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour began in style.
With the finest junior surfers converging on the Coffs coast, day one saw some mind-blowing action - with radical and progressive surfing headlining the day’s events. Top seed Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) was in scintillating form, announcing her intentions for the event, and the New Year en-route to semi-finals berth.
“It’s really good to get the year underway in a positive way,” Wright said after demolishing the one-metre conditions. “It was a little bit tricky, but still fun,” after accruing a combined heat total of 15.66 (out of a possible 20), which included a smoking 8.33-point ride. Having had an amazing year in 2008, which saw her crowned as an Australian junior champion and the youngest ever ASP World Tour event winner, Wright enjoyed a low-key offseason.
“I’ve just been cruising around and free-surfing heaps,” she admitted. “We’ve moved up the coast to Lennox (Head) and it has really helped my surfing over the summer, hopefully it will continue to improve,” Wright added. As the third stop on the prestigious 2009 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Circuit, the Grade 3 ASP Rated Boys event, and Grade 1 ASP Rated Girls event, the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour sees a whopping $23,000 up for grabs.

Also in brilliant form on day one was Ellie- Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW), who used the shifting peaks of Diggers Beach to her advantage. “It was quite difficult out there,” Coffey admitted. Eliminating third seed Kirstie Jones (Ulladulla, NSW) and the ever-dangerous Kirby Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) in an extremely tight affair, Coffey was in awe of the standard on show today.
“These events really highlight how good girls surfing is right now.” Having yesterday announced her signing with event sponsor Billabong, Coffey is looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship for this year and beyond. “I’m really stoked to have solidified my future with Billabong,” she said. “They’re such a great company and I’m looking forward to a successful 2009.”
However, it was second seed Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) who stamped her class on the event with the highest single wave score of the event with a 9.20 – ride (out of a possible 10) securing a semi-final spot. Angela Keighran (Mullaway, NSW) was the best performing local contestant, finishing equal ninth.
The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is a mobile event stretching throughout the Coffs Coast and will be held from the 11-15 February 2009 and with the boys division to be held tomorrow, the action shows no sign of slowing down.
The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour will be broadcast LIVE on Coastalwatch. The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is proudly supported by Sony, Virgin Blue, VonZipper, Kustom, Coopers Surf Australia, ASP Australasia and Surfing NSW.
